SUMMARY:So Surreal: Behind the Masks
DESCRIPTION:Watch a feature documentary that traces the storied journey of Indigenous masks from the far reaches of Turtle Island (North America) into the hands of European Surrealists\, influencing the work and worldview of some of the most well-known modern artists and writers of all time including Max Ernst\, André Breton\, Roberto Matta and Joan Miró – all while following the dramatic quest to return a mask that was brutally stolen from the Kwakwa̱ka̱ ʼwakw people on Canada’s northwest coast over a century ago. Part caper\, part road trip\, part spiritual journey\, So Surreal: Behind the Masks follows Cree filmmaker Neil Diamond (Reel Injun\, Red Fever) as he travels coast-to-coast and across the Atlantic and back\, gradually piecing together this groundbreaking global story of influence\, reconnection and restitution. Directors: Neil Diamond (Cree) and Joanne Robertson\, Canada\, 2024\, 88 min. Join directors Neil Diamond and Joanne Robertson\, and Maria Galban\, the museum’s Collections Documentation Manager\, for a post-screening discussion and Q&A.

SUMMARY:Mafalda's Hijinks
DESCRIPTION:Álvaro Enrigue and Rivka Galchen introduce South America’s greatest comic. Frank Wynne’s translation from the Spanish of Mafalda will bring readers into the life and mind of a six-year-old girl investigating the political wreckage all around her. Rabble rouser\, chess enthusiast\, passionate advocate for peace and the abolition of soup\, Mafalda made her debut in early 1960s Argentina. In the next years she went world-wide\, as Quino’s comic was translated into language after language. Mafalda became a symbol of curiosity\, democracy\, and free thinking. She was beloved by literary greats: Julio Cortázar\, Gabriel García Márquez\, Umberto Eco\, Mario Vargas Llosa\, and Isabel Allende have all praised her. Álvaro Enrigue and Rivka Galchen will discuss Mafalda and celebrate her arrival in English.

SUMMARY:“A Calculated Restraint: What Allied Leaders Said About the Holocaust” Book Talk
DESCRIPTION:The Allied leaders rarely spoke directly about the Holocaust in public. When Churchill and Stalin alluded to Nazi mass murder of civilians in early speeches\, they said much less than they knew. Not until December 1942 did Allied governments issue a joint statement about Nazi Germany’s policy of exterminating the Jews of Europe. Roosevelt deferred his own public statement until March 1944. Why didn’t these leaders speak up sooner? Through close readings of public and private statements\, Richard Breitman\, an acclaimed author and distinguished emeritus professor at American University\, pieces together the competing motivations that drove each leader’s response to the atrocities. Timely and incisive\, A Calculated Restraint sheds new light on the relationship between World War II and the Holocaust.

You’ll get to see how the designers at Bowne lock up limited edition designs that showcase some of the more eccentric parts from the Seaport Museum’s printing and graphic arts collection.
