SUMMARY:‘Til Kingdom Come
DESCRIPTION:Millions of American Evangelicals are praying for the State of Israel. Among them are the Binghams\, a dynasty of Kentucky pastors\, and their Evangelical congregants in an impoverished coal mining town. They donate to pro-Israel philanthropic organizations because they fervently believe that Jews are crucial to Jesus’s return. The 2020 documentary ‘Til Kingdom Come (76 minutes\, English\, no subtitles) traces this unusual relationship between American Evangelicals and Israel. Director Maya Zinshtein follows the connection from rural Kentucky to the halls of government in Washington\, exposing a stunning backstory where financial\, political\, and messianic motivations intersect with an apocalyptic worldview that is reshaping American foreign policy toward the Middle East.

SUMMARY:The Sign Painter
DESCRIPTION:Ansis earns his living as a sign painter\, a seemingly innocent occupation. His craft is needed during every regime—the authoritarian Thirties\, the Communism that followed\, and Nazism. Ansis is compelled to cooperate. He paints the signs of the city green\, later replaced by red\, and finally brown. But then he gets caught up in a love triangle. While being in love with a Jewish girl named Zisla\, whom he cannot marry for religious and social reasons\, he falls for a Latvian girl\, who quickly captures his heart. Historical events turn the perspective of relationships upside down as Zisla\, the daughter of a rich merchant\, turns into a class enemy—a communist. Ansis’s relationship with both women becomes explosive after Zisla falls victim to Nazi persecution. Follow Ansis’ journey in The Sign Painter (2021\, Latvian with English subtitles)\, a new film from Latvian director Viesturs Kairišs.

SUMMARY:Boris Lurie: Nothing To Do But To Try
DESCRIPTION:Boris Lurie: Nothing To Do But To Try is a first-of-its-kind exhibition on the 20th-century artist and Holocaust survivor Boris Lurie. Centered around his earliest work\, the so-called War Series\, as well as never-before-exhibited objects and ephemera from Lurie’s personal archive\, the exhibition presents a portrait of an artist reckoning with devastating trauma\, haunting memories\, and an elusive\, lifelong quest for freedom. In drawing together artistic practice and historical chronicle\, Boris Lurie: Nothing To Do But To Try is fertile new territory for the Museum of Jewish Heritage\, offering a survivor’s searing visual testimony within a significant art historical context. The Museum is open Wednesday\, Thursday\, and Sunday from 11 AM – 7 PM ET through October 17. The Museum is closed on Jewish holidays and on Thanksgiving. SUMMARY:Native New York
DESCRIPTION:Native New York journeys through city and state to explore the question “What makes New York a Native place?” The exhibition encompasses 12 places in present-day New York\, introducing visitors to the Native nations that call the region home. Stretching from Long Island through New York City and on toward Niagara Falls\, it covers pre–Revolutionary War exchanges through contemporary events. From Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) ironworkers who helped build Manhattan’s iconic skyscrapers to Lenape (Delaware) teens visiting their ancestral home\, stories of Native New Yorkers provide an expanded understanding of the region’s history and reveal that New York is—and always has been—a Native place.

SUMMARY:“Soros” Screening And Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Billionaire Holocaust survivor George Soros is one of the most influential and controversial figures of our time. Famous for betting against the Bank of England in 1992 and making a billion dollars in one day\, he is maligned by ideologues on both the left and the right for his public activism—and has become a symbol of Jews for many antisemites. Join the Museum for a virtual screening and discussion of Soros\, a new film that follows Soros across the globe and pulls back the curtain on his personal history\, private wealth\, and public activism. The film reveals a complicated genius whose experience as a Jew during the Holocaust gave rise to a lifelong crusade against authoritarianism and hate. This program will feature an exclusive panel discussion with the director Jesse Dylan and producer Priscilla Cohen\, and will be moderated by Jessica Shaw\, host of EW Live on Sirius XM. Attendees will also receive a private link to stream the film online from October 21 to October 27.

SUMMARY:Ted Seides on "Capital Allocators: How the World's Elite Money Managers Lead and Invest"
DESCRIPTION:The chief endowment officers at foundations\, family offices\, pension funds and sovereign wealth funds are the leaders in the world of finance. Across the entire investment industry\, few participants understand how these holders of the keys to the kingdom allocate their time and their capital. What’s more\, there is no formal training for how to do their work. So\, how do these influential leaders practice their craft? How do they make investment decisions on everything from hiring managers to portfolio construction? Join us for an afternoon webinar with author Ted Seides as he discusses his new book\, Capital Allocators\, with Jonathan Brolin\, founder and managing partner of Edenbrook Capital LLC\, on this opaque corner of the investment landscape.

SUMMARY:Architecture with Chinese Characteristics: How the Past is Driving New Ideas for China’s Future Cities
DESCRIPTION:Join top architects and urban thinkers for a wide-ranging discussion on China’s cities of the future. For decades\, China’s planners focused on tearing down the old\, and building the new in order to fuel the nation’s rapid development. Glistening cities rose\, while psychological and social costs took a back seat. Today\, as China struts more confidently on the world stage\, its architects are reaching back to Chinese tradition to reinvent urban planning—and redefine what it means to be modern.

SUMMARY:Día de los Muertos celebration (Day of the Dead)
DESCRIPTION:In recorded presentations by two renowned Mexican families\, the museum showcases two traditions central to Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos): the art of making figures from sugar and papier-mâché. These two presentations will take place in Spanish. “The Sweet Story of Alfeñique” follows matriarch Margarita Mondragón as she creates skulls and animals\, artworks made of sugar (alfeñique). “The Story of Cartonería Tradicional” (The Story of Papier-mâché) follows artisans Ana Miriam Castañeda Montes de Oca and Martín Ramírez as they make compelling figures known as calaveras (laughing skeletons)\, figures that humorously and poetically continue with their work in the afterlife. The art form dates to at least to the 17th century and were used to adorn religious spaces and represent various historical figures in processions. Evelyn Orantes and Joaquin Newman will demonstrate how to create paper marigolds.
