DESCRIPTION:In January 1945\, less than two weeks before the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp evacuation\, four forced laborer women\, Estusia Wajcblum\, Rosa Robota\, Alla Gartner\, and Regina Safirstein were hanged in public\, accused of sabotaging the Nazi war machine. SUMMARY:Building the Metropolis: Architecture\, Construction\, and Labor in New York City\, 1880–1935
DESCRIPTION:New York City experienced explosive growth between the 1880s and the 1930s\, when nearly a million buildings\, dozens of bridges and tunnels\, hundreds of miles of subway lines\, and thousands of miles of streets were erected to meet the needs of an ever-swelling population. The new book Building the Metropolis: Architecture\, Construction\, and Labor in New York City\, 1880–1935 (University of Chicago Press\, 2025) by historian Alexander Wood offers a revelatory look at this era of urban development by asking\, “Who built New York\, and how?” Focusing on the work of architects\, builders\, and construction workers\, Wood chronicles the physical process of the city’s rapid expansion. The business of construction became an important motor of economic\, political\, and social development. Drawing on resources that include city archives and the records of architecture firms\, construction companies\, and labor unions\, Wood describes the course of urban growth of city-building on an epic scale.

SUMMARY:Cuckoo
DESCRIPTION:One day when his electric rice cooker informed him that his meal was ready\, South Korean artist Jaha Koo experienced a deep sense of ‘Golibmuwon’ (고립무원). Twenty years ago a major economic crisis hugely impacted Jaha Koo’s generation of South Korean youth. ‘Golibmuwon’ is the untranslatable Korean word for the feeling of helpless isolation that arose for many. In bittersweet and humorous dialogues with Jaha’s clever rice cookers\, Cuckoo takes you on a journey through the past two decades of Korean history\, combining Jaha’s personal experiences with political events and reflections on happiness\, economic crises\, and mortality.

SUMMARY:In the Zone: A Maritime Play by Eugene O’Neill (Bunk Seating)
DESCRIPTION:Step into maritime and theatre history with the Seaport Museum and the professional actors of Mariner Theatrical as we bring Nobel Prize-winning playwright Eugene O’Neill’s (1888–1953) powerful maritime play\, In The Zone\, to life aboard the historic 1885 tall ship Wavertree. Originally debuting during the height of World War I fervor––only months after the United States entered the war––In The Zone is one of four one-act plays O’Neill wrote between 1914 and 1917\, inspired by his time aboard the British ship SS Ikala. Set aboard a tramp steamer\, the play delves into themes of paranoia\, xenophobia\, and ambition as the sailors grow suspicious that one of their own may be a spy. As you enter the forecastle of Wavertree\, you’ll be transported to the tense confines of the SS Glencairn\, an Allied munitions ship braving the infamous “U-Boat Zone.” The intimate setting enhances the drama\, complemented by the atmospheric folk music of Nathan Bishop and his band\, Faoileán. Check website for times.

SUMMARY:South Street Seaport Museum Family Activity Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Let your creativity fly at the Seaport Museum by making your own signal flag swags. For centuries\, flags were the only form of communication between ships at sea\, and between ships and the shore. In the 19th century\, signaling with special flags developed into a system capable of passing several types of information and relatively elaborate messages. This even became a successful form of communication between crews who didn’t share a common language. Learn more about how sailors communicate using these vibrant flags that feature different patterns\, shapes\, and colors\, while making your own banner that spells out whatever message you like. There will also be opportunities to use your new-found skill by decoding others’ signal flag messages.

SUMMARY:Bounding Rivers\, Silent Waves—the Legend of General Ken Wang
DESCRIPTION:Online lecture. The Republican era of China was a period of remarkable cultural and political dynamism\, producing many luminaries and historical figures. However\, the true images of many of these individuals have been obscured. Ken Wang (Wang Geng) is one such figure. As a distinguished graduate of West Point and a recipient of the Boxer Indemnity Scholarship\, his reputation has long been overshadowed by rumors and inaccurate reporting. Beyond having a military career\, he was a vital witness to key moments in Republican China’s history. This lecture aims to uncover the historical truth and invite the audience to re-examine this overlooked historical figure and his contributions.

SUMMARY:Movement: New York’s Long War to Take Back its Streets from the Car
DESCRIPTION:In her new book\, Movement: New York’s Long War to Take Back Its Streets from the Car\, Nicole Gelinas presents a gripping account of how the automobile has failed New York City and how mass transit and a revitalized streetscape are vital to the city’s post-pandemic recovery. In a history that spans a century\, Gelinas outlines how New Yorkers spent the first half of the twentieth century trying and failing to adapt its urban density to fit the private automobile\, then\, in the past fifty years\, how advocates have been resisting and reversing those mistakes. Moving beyond the now-standard characterization of “Saint Jane” Jacobs versus the villain Robert Moses\, Gelinas looks closely at the planners and protestors that both preceded and followed their actions and advocacy. After her presentation\, Gelinas will be engaged in dialogue with Lynne Sagalyn\, a scholar of planning\, policy\, and real estate and author of Power at Ground Zero and recently\, Times Square Remade: The Dynamics of Urban Change.
