SUMMARY:Mass Timber by Code and at Scale
DESCRIPTION:Based in Seattle\, architect Susan Jones is a national leader in the Mass Timber community. Established in 2003\, her firm\, atelierjones\, completed four of the earliest mass timber buildings permitted in the United States and her recently completed project “Heartwood” marks a first of its kind in the US – eight stories of Mass Timber workforce housing. Developed by local nonprofit-housing operator Community Roots Housing on the site of a former parking lot in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood\, Heartwood offers 126 units\, of which roughly one-third are income-restricted. It is also a prototype for tall timber affordable housing at scale.

SUMMARY:Solidarity and Persecution: Lesbian Experiences in Nazi Germany
DESCRIPTION:The fates of lesbian women in Nazi Germany have long been contested. When the Memorial to Homosexuals Persecuted Under Nazism opened in Berlin in 2008 it was an occasion for protest. Lesbian activists were frustrated that the monument focused exclusively on the fates of gay men\, insinuating that women had not also faced persecution. This talk by Samuel Clowes Huneke\, assistant professor of history at George Mason University\, recounts several life stories of lesbians who experienced the Nazi dictatorship\, highlighting the many trajectories that queer women followed in those twelve years. It argues that lesbians did\, in fact\, face persecution\, ranging from everyday harassment and surveillance all the way to imprisonment in concentration camps. At the same time\, the talk recovers these women’s agency\, contending that many of them resisted fascism with solidarity that cut across lines of class\, race\, and gender.

SUMMARY:Good Jew
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Henry Altman’s St. Louis den\, 1986\, where he reveals extraordinary adventures of survival during the WWII Holocaust. He navigated the Warsaw ghetto\, escaped Treblinka death-camps twice\, joined the Resistance\, blew up trains\, and played cat-and-mouse with the SS. Fearing these stories would die with Henry\, his son\, Murray Changar\, along with partner and performer Frank Blocker\, created this touching\, verbatim solo play directed by Jamibeth Margolis\, herself a granddaughter of survivors. It offers hope and humor\, and a much-needed historical perspective\, while keeping audiences on the edge of their seats.

SUMMARY:You Look Like a Fun Guy
DESCRIPTION:Outdoor performance event inspired by John Cage’s interest in mycology and his methods of composing music. Directed and choreographed by John Heginbotham\, You Look Like a Fun Guy celebrates Cage’s rigorous and playful concerns as well as the astonishing nature and behavior of fungi. Shaped and informed by its surroundings\, this unique performance event responds to the natural environment it inhabits.

SUMMARY:Whole body in my ear
DESCRIPTION:Whole body in my ear is a performance in which sound and body emerge as one fluid and dynamic textural form. The work sees performers splice and patch text\, movement\, and sound scores in creating new languages and porous realities. This endurance-based auditory fantasy pushes toward dissonance\, using it as a means to explore and amplify otherness. The scores build\, heighten\, and erode an ouroboric circuit—with patterns repeating\, leaking\, and breaking apart throughout a shifting sculptural landscape.

SUMMARY:Fallacies
DESCRIPTION:Fallacies blurs the lines between original source and personal interpretation\, constructing dance from a dancer’s perspective. Distorting referential choreography to reveal new patterns and physical possibilities\, the piece materializes as a Rorschach test of dance. When the movement is stripped down\, what do you see? By rendering movement through the lens of its performers\, Fallacies makes invisible embodied histories visible. In addition to performances June 8 and 9\, audiences are invited to join a workshop with Nattie Trogdon + Hollis Bartlett at 5pm on Sunday\, June 9 to learn movement from Fallacies\, gaining insight into the piece’s various original sources before seeing the performance that evening.

SUMMARY:Yung Wing: The First Modern Intellectual of China
DESCRIPTION:Yung Wing (1828–1912) was a transformative figure in China’s modernization. Often hailed as the first Chinese graduate of an American university\, his life and work transcended this singular achievement. While Yung Wing is rightfully recognized as the “Father of Chinese Students Studying Abroad\,” his impact extended far beyond education. China’s modern history was a period of intense social and political upheaval. While other prominent figures dominated specific eras\, Yung Wing’s influence spanned the entire period. His contributions were multifaceted\, shaping not just educational reform but also China’s broader development. To mark the 170th anniversary of Yung Wing’s graduation from Yale University\, the Renwen Society presents a special lecture by Prof. Lei Yi\, a leading Yung Wing scholar. Prof. Lei will delve into Yung Wing’s historical context\, the qualities that made him a pioneer and driving force for modernization\, his evolving views on reform within the Qing Dynasty\, and his intellectual characteristics – rationality\, independence\, and a forward-looking vision.

SUMMARY:“Treasure” Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:A father-daughter road trip set in 1990s Poland\, Treasure follows Ruth (Lena Dunham)\, an American music journalist\, and her father\, Edek (Stephen Fry)\, a charmingly stubborn Holocaust survivor\, on a journey to his homeland. While Ruth is eager to make sense of her family’s past\, Edek embarks on the trip with his own agenda. This emotional\, funny culture clash of two New Yorkers exploring post-socialist Poland is a powerful example of how reconnecting with family and the past can be an unexpected treasure. Following the film there will be a short Q&A with the film’s director Julia von Heinz and Lily Brett\, author of Too Many Men\, from which the film was adapted.
