SUMMARY:Virtual Walking Tour: Jewish Venice
DESCRIPTION:Join the Museum and Our Travel Circle for a virtual walking tour of Venice\, Italy\, home to the one of the oldest Jewish ghettos in the world. Established in 1516\, the Venetian Ghetto became a model for other Jewish ghettos elsewhere. The Ghetto was home to the world’s first “skyscrapers” and the first-ever production of William Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice\, noted for its antisemitic themes. On our walking tour\, we will explore the neighborhood’s establishment; the history of Napoleon’s march on Venice in 1797\, when restrictions on the city’s Jewish residents were lifted; and the Nazi occupation of Venice in 1943.

SUMMARY:Virtual Walking Tour: Jewish Seville
DESCRIPTION:Join the Museum and Our Travel Circle for a virtual walking tour of Jewish history in the Santa Cruz Quarter of Seville\, Spain. Santa Cruz was home to a thriving Jewish community between the 13th century\, when King Ferdinand III of Castille granted the neighborhood to Seville’s Jews\, and the 15th century\, when they were expelled as part of the Spanish Inquisition. The community of 5\,000 Jews made up 5% of the city’s total population. Our tour guide\, Jose Luis\, will show us a remnant of the wall that surrounded the Jewish quarter\, and two of the city’s four synagogues\, which have been converted into churches: San Bartolomé and Santa María la Blanca. We’ll tour streets that were once named Judíos\, Levíes\, Agua\, Doncella\, and Vida\, reminding us of the city’s Sephardic past. The neighborhood’s whitewashed facades\, flowers\, and patios will provide clues into what daily life was like for Seville’s Jews before the Spanish Inquisition.

SUMMARY:Virtual Walking Tour: Jewish Istanbul
DESCRIPTION:Join the Museum and Our Travel Circle for a virtual walking tour of Istanbul\, which is home to the vast majority of Turkey’s 26\,000 Jewish citizens. Istanbul’s Jewish community today is a fraction of its size during Ottoman rule in the 16th and 17th centuries\, when it was one of the world’s most important Jewish centers. Unlike Jews in much of Europe\, Istanbul’s 500\,000 Jews were permitted to work in all professions and could enter the Ottoman court. They excelled in commerce and were particularly important leaders in medicine. Remains from that time can still be seen in the Balat area\, along the Golden Horn\, and in the Galata district in Beyoğlu—the centers of Istanbul’s Jewish life. Our tour guide\, Safak\, will take us on a journey through time and into the modern day life of Jews in Istanbul.

SUMMARY:Virtual Walking Tour: Jewish Krakow
DESCRIPTION:Join the Museum and Our Travel Circle for a virtual walking tour of Kazimierz\, the historic Jewish quarter in Krakow\, Poland. Kazimierz was originally an independent city set up outside of Krakow by the King of Poland. As the neighborhood grew\, its Jewish residents thrived and established synagogues and businesses. In the 1930s\, before the onset of the Holocaust\, a quarter of Krakow’s population was Jewish. Our tour guide\, Anna\, will show us the Tempel Synagogue\, the oldest in Krakow; the Krakow Jewish Community Center\, which is a hub of the city’s resurgent Jewish community today; and interesting Jewish sites including Helena Rubinstein’s family home.
