DESCRIPTION:The American Institute of Architects was founded in Lower Manhattan by 29 architects in 1857 to “promote the scientific and practical perfection of its members” and “elevate the standing of the profession.” Until this time\, anyone who wished to call themselves an architect\, including masons\, carpenters\, bricklayers\, and other members of the building trade\, could do so. With over 95\,000 members and 200+ chapters\, AIA is the largest and most influential network of architects and design professionals in the world. AIANY is the country’s largest chapter and in 2011 it launched Archtober—NYC’s annual\, month-long architecture festival. We will honor the AIA National Presidents with a two-part event beginning\, with an afternoon walking tour of some of the most distinguished buildings designed by them\, that have shaped Lower Manhattan.

SUMMARY:Battery Park City Tour: The Business Core
DESCRIPTION:The Business Core tour of the Museum’s three thematic walking tours of Battery Park City focuses on the commercial core with its 1980s skyscrapers of the original World Financial Center (now Brookfield Place) by architect Cesar Pelli\, as well as the expansive North Cove Marina and its public realm. This walk will investigate how the planning concept of public-private partnership was both the principle and economic engine of the Battery Park City project and how the goals of opening the waterfront to public access and recreation was realized over three decades.

DESCRIPTION:As the U.S. approaches its 250th birthday of the Declaration of Independence\, we will walk Wall Street to recall its colonial history\, recap its role as the banking center of capitalism\, and observe its recent rise of a reinvented residential neighborhood. Skyscraper Museum director Carol WIllis will lead a 90-minute walking tour that meets in front of Federal Hall\, at the juncture of Wall\, Broad\, and Nassau streets\, and weaves its way through the Financial District\, highlighting both the current uses of the landmark buildings that line Wall Street and discussing the generations of structures that occupied those sites and the cast of characters that populated this historic district.

SUMMARY:The Forty Years Manhattan was Dutch Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Beginning in 1624\, the Dutch West India Company transformed an edge of Manhattan wilderness into the colonial trading post of New Amsterdam. They controlled Manhattan for only 40 years\, until 1664\, when the British took over. And yet the Dutch influence set the character of New York for the next 400 years\, particularly in its money orientation\, and tolerance for ethnic and religious diversity. By 1644 the roughly 500 inhabitants of New Amsterdam included a wide variety of Europeans\, Blacks both enslaved and free\, and native Lenapes. Over 18 languages were heard on the streets. There were Dutch Reform adherents\, Catholics\, Quakers\, and Anglicans. The first Jewish settlers in North America came to these streets in 1654.

SUMMARY:Jewish Colonial Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:The first Jewish immigrants to Manhattan arrived in 1654\, during Dutch colonial times. The small group of 23 men\, women\, & children were allowed to stay\, but with considerable restrictions. Their immediate concern was how to earn a living when many occupations were closed to them. During the Dutch and British periods\, groups of Jews arrived from a variety of countries. The process of their making Manhattan a home involved creating a place to pray\, providing kosher food\, keeping their children within the faith\, and balancing the interests of Sephardic and Ashkenazi residents.
