SUMMARY:Liss’s Long Road to Liberty in New York’s Founding Era
DESCRIPTION:Join historian and author Claire Bellerjeau as she introduces Elizabeth\, or Liss. Enslaved on Long Island\, Liss showed great agency when she risked everything to escape with a British commander during the Revolutionary War. Despite her bravery\, within weeks of her escape Liss was re-enslaved in British-held Manhattan\, where she interacted with Washington’s lead spy\, Robert Townsend\, aka “Culper\, Jr.” As the Culper Spy Ring began using secret codes and invisible ink to smuggle vital information to Washington\, Liss may also have engaged in intelligence gathering for the Patriot cause. At the end of the war\, Liss again chose her own path\, deciding not to leave with the British evacuation. Now expecting a child\, she remained in New York City in the home of Robert Townsend\, hoping for the chance of a better life. Townsend resold Liss and her son to a widow who promised they could stay in the city\, but her path took a terrifying turn when the widow remarried\, selling Liss south to Charleston without her young son. In Charleston she was enslaved for two years by a violent man who years earlier had been part of the rioting mob at the Boston Massacre. Eventually Robert discovered what had happened and worked to smuggle Liss back to New York where she could reunite her with her son and continue to work towards securing her legal freedom. Liss’s escape with the British\, re-enslavement in Manhattan and later Charleston\, and her complex struggle for freedom gives new insight into the country’s founding era\, through the eyes of an enslaved Black woman seeking liberty in a country fighting for its own.

SUMMARY:Hidden Letters
DESCRIPTION:Nushu (女书)\, a secret language written in calligraphy shared by generations of Chinese women in their covert support of sisterhood\, hope and survival\, is now disappearing. Created during a time when women were not allowed to read or write\, Nushu was used to communicate their pain\, resistance and support with each other. Fast forward to modern China\, is Nushu still relevant when women have access to higher education and enjoy equal treatment in society? What are the challenges and implications\, if any\, that women still face today? Join China Institute for the screening of the award-winning documentary\, Hidden Letters\, on March 2nd\, followed by a conversation with Director Violet Du Feng\, hosted by Karen Ma\, film scholar and movie critic specializing in Chinese cinema. Spanning past and present Hidden Letters follows two millennial Chinese women\, connected by their fascination with the secret language of sisterhood and their desire to protect it.

SUMMARY:Sebastian Mallaby on "The Power Law: Venture Capital and the Making of the New Future"
DESCRIPTION:Innovations rarely come from “experts.” When it comes to improbable innovations\, a legendary tech VC told Sebastian Mallaby\, the future cannot be predicted\, it can only be discovered. It is the nature of the venture-capital game that most attempts at discovery fail\, but a very few succeed at such a scale that they more than make up for everything else. That extreme ratio of success and failure is the power law that drives the VC business\, all of Silicon Valley\, the wider tech sector and\, by extension\, the world. In The Power Law\, Sebastian Mallaby has parlayed unprecedented access to the most celebrated venture capitalists of all time—the key figures at Sequoia\, Kleiner Perkins\, Accel\, Benchmark and Andreessen Horowitz\, as well as Chinese partnerships such as Qiming and Capital Today—into a riveting blend of storytelling and analysis that unfurls the history of tech incubation\, in the Valley and ultimately worldwide. We learn the unvarnished truth\, often for the first time\, about some of the most iconic triumphs and infamous disasters in Valley history\, from the comedy of errors at the birth of Apple to the avalanche of venture money that fostered hubris at WeWork and Uber.

SUMMARY:30 Years Later: The 1993 Bombing and Operation Tradebom
DESCRIPTION:On February 26\, 1993\, terrorists detonated a van loaded with explosives in the parking garage of the World Trade Center. The attack killed six people\, including a pregnant woman\, and injured thousands. At the time\, this was the largest improvised explosive device ever ignited on American soil. To mark 30 years since the attack\, Marc Smerling\, Emmy-winning producer and creator of the new Apple Original podcast\, Operation: Tradebom\, is joined by three individuals featured in the program: former FBI Agents John Anticev and Frank Pellegrino\, and former NYPD officer\, Cory Cuneo. Together\, in conversation with Museum Director\, Clifford Chanin\, they recount responding to the attack; discuss Tradebom\, the FBI’s investigation into the bombing; and reflect on how the first attempt to bring down the Twin Towers changed our world.

SUMMARY:The Rosenstrasse Protest: Commemorating the 80th Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:The Rosenstrasse Protest of 1943 was held against the incarceration and potential deportation of roughly 2\,000 people who were arrested by the Gestapo on February 27\, 1943. With their loved ones held at Rosenstraße 2-4 in Berlin\, family members\, many of whom were women\, kept their protest going for a week until Nazi leader Joseph Goebbels ordered the prisoners’ release on March 6\, 1943. This program marks the 80th anniversary of the protest and the context of the mass arrest which targeted “exempted” Jews\, a term used for those who were married to a non-Jew or had one non-Jewish parent.

SUMMARY:Arthur Miller: American Witness
DESCRIPTION:In the new book Arthur Miller: American Witness from Yale’s Jewish Lives series\, distinguished theater critic John Lahr brings a unique perspective to the life of Arthur Miller\, the playwright who almost singlehandedly brought twentieth century American theater to a new level of cultural sophistication. Organized around the fault lines of Miller’s life and concentrating largely on his most prolific decades of the 1940s through the 1960s\, Lahr provides an original interpretation of Miller’s work\, personality\, and legacy.
