SUMMARY:Why We Die: The New Science of Aging and the Quest for Immortality
DESCRIPTION:Join Nobel Prize-winning author Venki Ramakrishnan and Titia de Lange\, Director of the Anderson Center for Cancer Research at The Rockefeller University in a discussion that will unveil the strides science has made in understanding aging and longevity—and Ramakrishnan’s new book\, Why We Die: The New Science of Aging and the Quest for Immortality. Unraveling the universal human fear of death\, Ramakrishnan traces our historical attempts to evade its inevitability—from religious afterlife beliefs to the existential realization in childhood that all we cherish is short-lived. He guides readers through the cutting-edge research shaping our understanding of mortality and raises the tantalizing possibility of extending our lifespan exponentially. As he navigates the recent breakthroughs in altering physiology to extend life\, he contemplates life\, and the biological purpose of death\, and probes the social and ethical implications of pursuing immortality.

SUMMARY:294th Anniversary of the Founding of New York City's First Synagogue
DESCRIPTION:Commemoration of the founding of New York City’s (and North America’s) first temple. On the seventh day of Passover April 8\, 1730 the nascent Jewish community of New York City consecrated the Mill Street Synagogue at what today is 26 South William Street. Congregation Shearith Israel which was has long since moved to the Upper West Side of Manhattan. The history of the Jewish communities in New York and its first native born Jewish leader\, the most dedicated and influential Hazzan\, Gershom Mendes Seixas\, is well documented. In addition to his contributions to the Revolutionary War effort\, he was also a trustee of Kings College and participated in George Washington’s Inauguration. The street was co-named Seixas Way on April 8\, 2019. In August 2019 a plaque was installed at 22 South William Street to commemorate the Mill Street Synagogue. It is\, therefore\, our intention to raise the community’s awareness regarding the important contribution of Seixas and his congregation to the rise of New York as that most cosmopolitan of American cities. The Gershom Mendes Seixas Religious Freedom Award will be bestowed.

SUMMARY:Number Our Days: A Photographic Oratorio
DESCRIPTION:How can we hold onto each other with joy\, even in the face of inevitable loss? Each day for 18 years\, Jamie Livingston documented his life by taking a single Polaroid—until his death at age 41. Then his “Photo of the Day” went online\, creating an immediate global sensation years before Instagram launched. With music for chorus\, orchestra\, and soloists by Grammy® nominee Luna Pearl Woolf (Fire & Flood) and a non-fiction libretto by acclaimed filmmaker David Van Taylor (Good Ol’ Charles Schulz)\, this multi-media oratorio explores our era’s strange alchemy of technology\, memory\, and community. Featuring John Holiday\, NOVUS NY orchestra\, and over 100 voices from Trinity Church Wall Street.
