DESCRIPTION:The second of the Skyscraper Museum’s three thematic walking tours of Battery Park City covers the middle zone of the commercial core with its 1980s skyscrapers of the original World Financial Center (now Brookfield Place) by architect Cesar Pelli\, as well as the expansive North Cove Marina and its public realm. This walk investigates how the planning concept of public-private partnership was both the principle and economic engine of the Battery Park City project. We will consider how the office and retail precinct connects to lower Manhattan and the World Trade Center and how the goal of opening the waterfront to public access and recreation was realized over three decades. They were going to take down the largest remaining symbols of British control in the city – the statue of King George III. In this immersive walking tour\, Mrs Q\, a prominent merchant\, will guide you back in time to relive one of the most important days in New York City during the Revolutionary War. Along the way\, you’ll interact with several reenactors to revolutionary events\, like a public reading of the Declaration of Independence\, an address from General Washington himself\, and Sons of Liberty members recounting the tearing down of the statue of King George III and Bowling Green Park.

This system was in place between 650 CE and 1905\, making it the world’s longest-lasting meritocracy. In the course of over 1200 years\, the examination system helped shape China’s intellectual\, cultural\, political\, and religious life\, giving rise to a unique gentry class of scholar-bureaucrats. The Chinese civil examination system was adopted by a number of neighboring Asian countries\, such as Vietnam\, Korea and Japan\, in one form or another. To help understand this important institution in traditional China\, the Renwen Society presents a lecture by Ms. Feng Jiahong\, President of the Imperial Examination Museum of China in Nanjing\, on the history\, process and significance of the imperial examinations. The Imperial Examination Museum of China in Nanjing was built on the former site of the largest imperial examination center in China. The rare archives\, records\, actual examination papers as well as the breathtaking architecture of the museum will also be introduced in the lecture.

Born into a musical family of Romaniote and Sephardic Jewish-Greek heritage\, Pengas was raised in Jaffa\, and a budding career as a performer in Greek clubs in Israel brought him to New York in 1970 to participate in the legendary scene of Turkish-owned clubs along 8th Avenue that were the pulse of Hell’s Kitchen from the 1920s to the 1970s. A popular performer in the local Greek and Sephardic/Mizrachi communities\, Pengas and his Noga Band cook up a multicultural stew of rhythms and modes spanning Greece\, Turkey\, Armenia\, Israel\, and the Levant.

His story is the subject of Mengele: Unmasking the Angel of Death\, a definitive new biography by former Museum Director David G. Marwell\, who was tasked with uncovering Mengele’s fate while he worked at the U.S. Justice Department in the 1980s. Marwell’s book describes Mengele’s training and early promise as a scientist; his wartime service in combat and at Auschwitz; and his postwar refuge in Germany and South America. It chronicles the international search for Mengele in 1985 that ended in a cemetery in Sao Paulo\, Brazil\, and the dogged forensic investigation that eventually confirmed his death. Join the Museum for a program exploring Mengele’s story.
