DESCRIPTION:Growing up in Hungary during the Holocaust\, Erika Hecht was a “hidden child\,” one of many Jewish children who were provided with false identities and survived the war as Christians. But when the village where they were hiding became a battlefield between the German and Soviet armies\, Erika and her mother were forced to flee\, hiding in damp cellars\, seeking shelter on the porch of a house occupied by soldiers\, and living in mountainside caves. It wasn’t until many years after the war that Erika reconnected with her Jewish identity. Erika’s harrowing story is the subject of her new memoir Don’t Ask My Name: A Hidden Child’s Tale of Survival\, published by East End Press in June 2021. Join the Museum for a program exploring Erika’s experiences during the Holocaust and her struggle with identity\, reinvention\, and resilience. She will be interviewed by the Museum’s Senior Public Programs Producer Ari Goldstein.

Set in the slums of Shanghai in 1935\, the film presents the precarious lives of the urban lower classes in a tragicomic mode. War looms in the background of this story of a refugee singer. The Japanese army was soon to invade Shanghai\, but\, to accommodate China’s censors\, the film never mentions the enemy by name. The film showcases the popularity of film musicals\, the charm and charisma of its “golden voice” star\, the multiple influences of Hollywood on the Chinese talkies\, and the violent realities of 1930s China. DESCRIPTION:The second of the Skyscraper Museum’s three thematic walking tours of Battery Park City covers the middle zone of the commercial core with its 1980s skyscrapers of the original World Financial Center (now Brookfield Place) by architect Cesar Pelli\, as well as the expansive North Cove Marina and its public realm. This walk investigates how the planning concept of public-private partnership was both the principle and economic engine of the Battery Park City project. We will consider how the office and retail precinct connects to lower Manhattan and the World Trade Center and how the goal of opening the waterfront to public access and recreation was realized over three decades. DESCRIPTION:The second of the Skyscraper Museum’s three thematic walking tours of Battery Park City covers the middle zone of the commercial core with its 1980s skyscrapers of the original World Financial Center (now Brookfield Place) by architect Cesar Pelli\, as well as the expansive North Cove Marina and its public realm. This walk investigates how the planning concept of public-private partnership was both the principle and economic engine of the Battery Park City project. We will consider how the office and retail precinct connects to lower Manhattan and the World Trade Center and how the goal of opening the waterfront to public access and recreation was realized over three decades. Tour duration is around 60 minutes. This tour will meet in the Wintergarden at Brookfield Place. You must RSVP by the Eventbrite link to reserve a place for each person on the tour.

DESCRIPTION:As one of the most influential disability rights activists in U.S. history\, Judy Heumann has spent her career fighting to achieve respect\, acceptance\, and inclusion. The lawsuits she won\, sit-ins she led\, and legislation she championed all sparked a national movement that led to the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990. Heumann is also the daughter of refugees who fled Nazism in the 1930s\, and the granddaughter of German Jews who were killed by the Nazis. Growing up in Brooklyn\, she was acutely aware of her family’s story—and she understood\, on multiple levels\, the dangers of bigotry and the importance of speaking out against it. Her story is featured in the Oscar-nominated 2020 film Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution and in her recently-released book Being Heumann: An Unrepentant Memoir of a Disability Rights Activist. Join Heumann for a conversation with Bill Abrams\, President of Trickle Up and former President of New York Times Television\, about her family background in the Holocaust\, her new memoir\, and her remarkable career fighting to forge a society in which we all belong.

SUMMARY:Navigating Crisis Through Film: Crows and Sparrows
DESCRIPTION:Shot during the last days of the Civil War in China’s transition to socialism\, Crows and Sparrows is one of the best crafted films of the 1940s. But its director\, Zheng Junli\, navigated some treacherous political waters to get it made. The original script was banned by the Nationalist government\, presumably because of its unflattering depiction of corruption\, inflation\, and social inequity. Then after the Communists invaded\, the filmmaker tacked on a politically acceptable ending. The film captures the frenzy of change through several households in a traditional shikumen Shanghai building. The tenants\, or “sparrows\,” share their dreams and uncertainties of the future while facing the threat of eviction by the “crows\,” the landlord couple preparing to flee Communist rule. One of the finest examples of critical realism spiced up with a dose of slapstick comedy\, Crows and Sparrows features some of China’s most celebrated stars.
