SUMMARY:Spring Awakening
DESCRIPTION:First performed under heavy censorship in Germany in 1906\, Spring Awakening closed after one night in New York in 1917 amid public outrage and charges of obscenity. The play’s content was radical indeed: teenage sex\, suicide\, abortion\, masturbation\, sadomasochism. The story traces the dawning sexual awareness of four teenagers\, Melchior\, Moritz\, Wendla\, and Hansy\, who\, in their painfully funny contradictions—they are at once too innocent and not remotely innocent at all—remain fresh and unsettling even in our own sex-saturated culture.

SUMMARY:Architecture for Animals
DESCRIPTION:Animals are skillful architects—from beehives to birds’ nests\, animals create spaces best fit for their needs. But now\, they’re moving into the big city! We will dive into the relationship between architects and their clients\, as kids choose their favorite animal and design an apartment based on its needs! Does a giraffe need an apartment with tall ceilings? Kids will use their imaginations to design homes for animal families (like an urban Noah’s Arc!) while considering accessibility\, health\, and views. Recommended for ages 4-8.

SUMMARY:New York’s Culper Spy Ring
DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, historian and author Bill Bleyer will illuminate the true tale of the Culper Spy Ring\, a covert operation that provided critical support to George Washington’s Continental Army during the American Revolution. In the quest for independence\, George Washington recognized the immense value of enemy intelligence circulating through the streets of Lower Manhattan. He enlisted Major Benjamin Tallmadge\, a native of Long Island\, to spearhead an intelligence network that history remembers as the Culper Spy Ring. Drawing from his recent book\, George Washington’s Long Island Spy Ring: A History and Tour Guide\, Bleyer will sift through the myths and realities\, showcasing the ingenious workings of this indispensable covert network that ultimately played a pivotal role in securing victory for the Patriots. Over the centuries\, numerous legends have emerged regarding the Long Island-based Culper Spy Ring. These include stories about Anna Strong’s clothesline\, the secret passage of intelligence across the Long Island Sound\, and various assumptions about the methods employed by the spies. Join this program to unravel the truth behind these legends and gain a deep understanding of the network’s actual operations.

SUMMARY:Concrete Solutions: Residential High-Rises in Chicago
DESCRIPTION:The most famous residential structures of postwar Chicago are still Mies van der Rohe’s 860-880 Lake Shore Drive with the modernist expression of their steel skeleton. But Mies also designed in concrete\, as did many Chicago architects and builders throughout the 20th century. Chicago developed home-grown expertise in flat slab\, “rib-cage\,” and tube construction that produced remarkably innovative residential towers across the city. While a few of the postwar icons—Marina City and Lake Point Tower\, for instance—are well studied\, others such as Lawless Gardens\, 320 Oakdale\, and Quadrangle House deserve greater attention for the impact they had on the city’s building culture. In this webinar\, Thomas Leslie will discuss his new book\, Chicago Skyscrapers\, 1934-1986: How Technology\, Politics\, Finance\, and Race Reshaped the City\, an expansive architectural history that tackles the history of a half century of Chicago’s built environment.
