SUMMARY:Navigating Crisis Through Film: Crows and Sparrows
DESCRIPTION:Shot during the last days of the Civil War in China’s transition to socialism\, Crows and Sparrows is one of the best crafted films of the 1940s. But its director\, Zheng Junli\, navigated some treacherous political waters to get it made. The original script was banned by the Nationalist government\, presumably because of its unflattering depiction of corruption\, inflation\, and social inequity. Then after the Communists invaded\, the filmmaker tacked on a politically acceptable ending. The film captures the frenzy of change through several households in a traditional shikumen Shanghai building. The tenants\, or “sparrows\,” share their dreams and uncertainties of the future while facing the threat of eviction by the “crows\,” the landlord couple preparing to flee Communist rule. One of the finest examples of critical realism spiced up with a dose of slapstick comedy\, Crows and Sparrows features some of China’s most celebrated stars. Virtual lecture about the film today. A link to view each film online is also available for viewing at home.

SUMMARY:Asia
DESCRIPTION:Shira Haas made an indelible impression as the Emmy-nominated lead in the recent TV series Unorthodox. In Asia (2020\, 85 minutes\, Hebrew with English subtitles)\, Haas stars as a Russian émigré to Israel\, navigating her teenage years along with her single mother\, burdened by a largely undefined illness that makes all of her decisions infinitely more poignant. The film explores the inevitable chasm that divides the generations and creates barriers between the healthy and the sick – while telling a universal and timeless story of maternal love and loss.

SUMMARY:Stories Survive: Dorien Grunbaum
DESCRIPTION:Dorien Grunbaum was born in 1942 in Rotterdam\, Netherlands\, where her father was in the grain import/export business and her mother was a social worker. When Dorien was a year old\, her family was arrested and sent to Westerbork transit camp\, where they remained imprisoned for nine months. At Westerbork\, the Grunbaum family received papers from Dorien’s aunt and uncle in Mexico which granted them permission to emigrate to Palestine. These papers won the family better treatment for a short time in Bergen-Belsen\, where they were transferred from Westerbork in February 1944. After enduring horrors at Bergen-Belsen and then being liberated by the Soviet Army\, the Grunbaum family moved to the United States. Dorien was four years old. She has recently pieced together her family’s story from documents\, stories\, and her own memories. Join the Museum for a Stories Survive program exploring the Grunbaum family’s survival in the Holocaust and Dorien’s efforts to reconstruct their story.

SUMMARY:Skyscraper Museum Walking Tours: BPC North Neighborhood
DESCRIPTION:The third of the Museum’s thematic walking tours of Battery Park City covers the north residential neighborhood\, which was developed in several phases\, beginning with Stuyvesant High School at the northeast edge and the esplanade and Rockefeller Park along the Hudson. A diagonal avenue lined with apartment buildings creates one face of the neighborhood\, while the inner courts of the large blocks are connected by the delightful Teardrop Park. We will explore the experiences of this small park which concentrates landscape architecture into a miniature world. Tour duration is around 60 minutes. Pre-registration is required.

SUMMARY:Two Stage Sisters: A Story of Old China\, Retold
DESCRIPTION:Xie Jin’s masterpiece was not shown in China until almost two decades after it was made. Banned for its depiction of old China\, the film is in many ways the summation of the cinematic style that began in Shanghai in the 1930s: brilliant use of space\, powerful camera movement\, and a story that follows the conflicting\, contradictory fates of its protagonists. Two Stage Sisters is also a perceptive meditation on Chinese opera itself\, chronicling changes in style and their relation to shifting notions of the role of art. Synopsis: In 1935\, a runaway bride hides out with a traveling Xiaoxing opera troupe; after allowing her to stay\, the company trains her and soon she is taking on the dan roles while her “sister” takes on the sheng male roles. Soon the two move on to Shanghai\, where they become hailed as the “queens” of the opera world. But as they learn\, such success comes with a price\, and each sister must decide how to manage her art and her life—as China navigates through WWII\, then the Civil War\, and finally the victory of the Communist Party.
