DESCRIPTION:Boris Lurie: Nothing To Do But To Try is a first-of-its-kind exhibition on the 20th-century artist and Holocaust survivor Boris Lurie. Centered around his earliest work\, the so-called War Series\, as well as never-before-exhibited objects and ephemera from Lurie’s personal archive\, the exhibition presents a portrait of an artist reckoning with devastating trauma\, haunting memories\, and an elusive\, lifelong quest for freedom. In drawing together artistic practice and historical chronicle\, Boris Lurie: Nothing To Do But To Try is fertile new territory for the Museum of Jewish Heritage\, offering a survivor’s searing visual testimony within a significant art historical context. The Museum is open Wednesday\, Thursday\, and Sunday from 11 AM – 7 PM ET through October 17. The Museum is closed on Jewish holidays and on Thanksgiving. As of October 18\, the Museum will be open Sunday and Wednesday: 10 AM to 5 PM; Thursday\, 10 AM to 8 PM; and Friday\, 10 AM to 3 PM.

SUMMARY:Rumbula Remembered: 80 Years Since The Mass Executions
DESCRIPTION:On November 30 and December 8\, 1941\, approximately 26\,000 Jews were murdered in the Rumbula Forest outside Riga\, Latvia. Along with the massacre at Babyn Yar\, the Rumbula Massacre represents one of the largest two-day Nazi mass shootings. Only three people who arrived at the Rumbula killing site survived the Holocaust. 80 years after the massacres\, join the Museum for a program revisiting the events at Rumbula and exploring their legacy. The program will feature work-in-progress clips from Rumbula’s Echo\, a forthcoming historical documentary film from director and producer Mitchell Lieber. The program will also feature a discussion between Lieber\, Lolita Tomsone\, Director of the Zana Lipke Memorial Museum and initiator of an annual Rumbula commemoration in central Riga\, and Ilya Lensky\, Director of the Jewish Museum of Latvia.

Fankhänel focuses on the work of Theodore Conrad (1910-1994)\, the most prominent and prolific American architectural model-maker of the 20th century\, whose innovative work was instrumental in the design and realization of many icons of American Modernism\, from the Rockefeller Center to Lever House and the Seagram Building. Conrad revolutionized the production of architectural models and became an entrepreneur. Fankhänel’s research is based on the recent discovery of his fully-preserved private archive-models\, photos\, letters\, business files\, and drawings.

Her works include The Human Condition and Eichmann in Jerusalem. This year is the 70th anniversary of her landmark book\, The Origins of Totalitarianism\, which explores the ways that totalitarian regimes come to power. Join the Museum for a program exploring Arendt’s legacy and continuing impact. The program will include a discussion between Samantha Rose Hill\, author of the new book Hannah Arendt\, part of Reaktion Books’s short biography series Critical Lives\, and the upcoming translation of Hannah Arendt’s Poems\, and Ken Krimstein\, author of The Three Escapes of Hannah Arendt.
