SUMMARY:Whole body in my ear
DESCRIPTION:Whole body in my ear is a performance in which sound and body emerge as one fluid and dynamic textural form. The work sees performers splice and patch text\, movement\, and sound scores in creating new languages and porous realities. This endurance-based auditory fantasy pushes toward dissonance\, using it as a means to explore and amplify otherness. The scores build\, heighten\, and erode an ouroboric circuit—with patterns repeating\, leaking\, and breaking apart throughout a shifting sculptural landscape.

SUMMARY:Fallacies
DESCRIPTION:Fallacies blurs the lines between original source and personal interpretation\, constructing dance from a dancer’s perspective. Distorting referential choreography to reveal new patterns and physical possibilities\, the piece materializes as a Rorschach test of dance. When the movement is stripped down\, what do you see? By rendering movement through the lens of its performers\, Fallacies makes invisible embodied histories visible. In addition to performances June 8 and 9\, audiences are invited to join a workshop with Nattie Trogdon + Hollis Bartlett at 5pm on Sunday\, June 9 to learn movement from Fallacies\, gaining insight into the piece’s various original sources before seeing the performance that evening.

SUMMARY:Yung Wing: The First Modern Intellectual of China
DESCRIPTION:Yung Wing (1828–1912) was a transformative figure in China’s modernization. Often hailed as the first Chinese graduate of an American university\, his life and work transcended this singular achievement. While Yung Wing is rightfully recognized as the “Father of Chinese Students Studying Abroad\,” his impact extended far beyond education. China’s modern history was a period of intense social and political upheaval. While other prominent figures dominated specific eras\, Yung Wing’s influence spanned the entire period. His contributions were multifaceted\, shaping not just educational reform but also China’s broader development. To mark the 170th anniversary of Yung Wing’s graduation from Yale University\, the Renwen Society presents a special lecture by Prof. Lei Yi\, a leading Yung Wing scholar. Prof. Lei will delve into Yung Wing’s historical context\, the qualities that made him a pioneer and driving force for modernization\, his evolving views on reform within the Qing Dynasty\, and his intellectual characteristics – rationality\, independence\, and a forward-looking vision.

SUMMARY:“Treasure” Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:A father-daughter road trip set in 1990s Poland\, Treasure follows Ruth (Lena Dunham)\, an American music journalist\, and her father\, Edek (Stephen Fry)\, a charmingly stubborn Holocaust survivor\, on a journey to his homeland. While Ruth is eager to make sense of her family’s past\, Edek embarks on the trip with his own agenda. This emotional\, funny culture clash of two New Yorkers exploring post-socialist Poland is a powerful example of how reconnecting with family and the past can be an unexpected treasure. Following the film there will be a short Q&A with the film’s director Julia von Heinz and Lily Brett\, author of Too Many Men\, from which the film was adapted.

SUMMARY:The History of Antisemitism: Henry Ford
DESCRIPTION:Antisemitism flourished in early twentieth-century America. The Great Wave of Immigration from 1881 to 1914 brought 2.2 million eastern European Jews to America\, fleeing persecution and seeking opportunity. They were often met with suspicion\, and even violence. One such person who is emblematic of the antisemitism of this time is Henry Ford\, founder of the Ford Motor Company. In 1918\, Ford purchased a newspaper\, The Dearborn Independent\, where he published antisemitic articles that would later become four volumes titled The International Jew. Based on The Protocols of the Elders of Zion\, which described an international ruling conspiracy\, the article series alleged that such a conspiracy was infiltrating America. These articles ran from 1920 to 1924\, reaching hundreds of thousands of readers and legitimizing ideas that otherwise may have remained on the fringe. Join the Museum for a panel discussion about Henry Ford’s antisemitism and its wide-ranging effects with Hasia R. Diner\, Professor Emerita in the Departments of History and the Skirball Department of Hebrew and Judaic Studies at New York University; Steven Watts\, author of The People’s Tycoon: Henry Ford and the American Century; and Victoria Woeste\, author of Henry Ford’s War on Jews and the Legal Battles Against Hate Speech. They will be in conversation with Britt Tevis\, Rene Plessner Postdoctoral Fellow in Holocaust and Antisemitism Studies at Columbia University.
