SUMMARY:How Do We Celebrate? A Cultural History Of Hanukkah
DESCRIPTION:Before the 1800s\, Hanukkah was a minor holiday to most Jews. However\, the status of the holiday began to change after the Civil War\, when Rabbi Max Lilienthal created Hanukkah events for children at his synagogue. Soon\, these types of events were adopted nationwide. In the twentieth century\, Jews began expanding the celebration of the holiday to compete with Christmas and reinforce their dedication to Judaism. Join the Museum for a program exploring the history of Hanukkah in the United States. The program will consist of a conversation between Jenna Joselit\, Professor of History at George Washington University\, and Marjorie Ingall\, columnist at Tablet magazine and author. The conversation will be moderated by Stephanie Butnick\, Deputy Editor of Tablet magazine and host of the podcast Unorthodox.

SUMMARY:9/11 and America's Standing in the World
DESCRIPTION:The events of 9/11 profoundly transformed how the United States engages with the rest of the world. Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton was at the forefront of that transformation\, first as a senator from New York (2001-2009) and then as secretary of state (2009-2013) in the Obama administration. SUMMARY:Person Place Thing with Randy Cohen: Featuring Guest David Gonzalez
DESCRIPTION:Person Place Thing is an interview show based on this idea: people are particularly engaging when they speak not directly about themselves but about something they care about. Guests talk about one person\, one place\, and one thing that are important to them. The result? Surprising stories from great speakers. Host Randy Cohen will be interviewing David Gonzalez\, co-editor of The New York Times Lens blog and works on the biweekly “Side Street” photo-essay feature for the Metro Section. As a long-time member of the Metro desk\, his work has often focused on the city’s neighborhoods and how they reflect the larger social and cultural issues in American society. His prizes include a Distinguished Writing Award from the American Society of Newspaper Editors\, the Columbia University’s Mike Berger Award and was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. Gonzalez was born and raised in the Bronx\, earned a B.A. from Yale University and an M.A. in Journalism from Columbia University.

SUMMARY:The Architectural Models of Theodore Conrad
DESCRIPTION:In her new book The Architectural Models of Theodore Conrad\, historian and curator Teresa Fankhänel offers an alternative history of American modern architecture\, highlighting the often-overlooked influence of architectural models and their makers. Fankhänel focuses on the work of Theodore Conrad (1910-1994)\, the most prominent and prolific American architectural model-maker of the 20th century\, whose innovative work was instrumental in the design and realization of many icons of American Modernism\, from the Rockefeller Center to Lever House and the Seagram Building. Conrad revolutionized the production of architectural models and became an entrepreneur. Fankhänel’s research is based on the recent discovery of his fully-preserved private archive-models\, photos\, letters\, business files\, and drawings.

SUMMARY:China in One Village
DESCRIPTION:China Institute invites you to join our first ever ONE READ project! Read the book with our community\, meet the author\, and deepen your understanding of modern China by examining the world behind Liang Hong’s literary sensation\, China in One Village. The book travels with the author to her ancestral village in landlocked Henan Province. What she finds is a family riven by the seismic changes in Chinese society and a village turned inside out by emigration\, neglect\, and environmental despoliation. The book\, newly published in English\, raises the question: after decades of rapid development\, what happens to the millions of Chinese still left behind by country’s astounding economic growth? On December 8\, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Ian Johnson joins author Liang Hong to kick off our One Read series with a virtual conversation about the human impact of China’s extraordinary rise.

SUMMARY:Trillions: How a Band of Wall Street Renegades Invented the Index Fund and Changed Finance Forever
DESCRIPTION:Webinar. Lunchtime program with Robin Wigglesworth\, the Financial Times’s global finance correspondent and author of Trillions\, as he discusses the incredible true story of the iconoclastic geeks who defied conventional wisdom and endured Wall Street’s scorn to launch the index fund revolution\, democratizing investing and saving hundreds of billions of dollars in fees. Fifty years ago\, the Manhattan Project of money management was quietly assembled in the financial industry’s backwaters\, unified by the heretical idea that even many of the world’s finest investors couldn’t beat the market in the long run. The motley crew of nerds—including Gene Fama\, Jack Bogle\, John McQuown and Nate Most—succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. Passive investing now accounts for more than $20 trillion\, equal to the entire gross domestic product of the US\, and is today a force reshaping markets\, finance and even capitalism itself in myriad subtle but pivotal ways.

SUMMARY:Seeing China Through Film: Suzhou River
DESCRIPTION:In-person screening of Suzhou River\, followed by a talkback with film expert Richard Peña. Lou Ye is one of the most influential and important directors in China today. Through his films\, Lou brings to light his interpretation of social issues of the marginalized in the Chinese society. One of his most important works\, Suzhou River\, is a tragic love story set in modern Shanghai. But rather than show off China’s glamorous “pearl of the orient\,” writer-director Lou sets the film amid the chaotic factories and abandoned warehouses along the Suzhou River\, which runs through the city. The film\, which was never shown in China\, gives us an up-close look into contemporary China’s gritty urban underbelly. The 10-part Seeing China Through Film series is a tour of China’s greatest films curated by Columbia University Film Professor Richard Pena\, former Program Director of the Film Society of Lincoln Center.
