SUMMARY:Herstory of the Universe
DESCRIPTION:Conceived\, directed and choreographed by Richard Move\, and commissioned by The Trust for Governors Island\, Herstory of the Universe leads visitors on a journey across Governors Island—from the ancient trees of Nolan Park to the secluded lawns of Hammock Grove and the dramatic topography of the Hills—through a series of six site-specific dance performances. Each performance is inspired by\, and in conversation with\, its unique site\, including the ecosystems\, architectures\, materials and species that dwell within. From the abstract to the fantastical\, the works embody various biological and natural processes in a kind of biomimicry—telling the stories of Governors Island through a series of kinetic\, strikingly costumed dance installations.

SUMMARY:The Sign Painter
DESCRIPTION:Ansis earns his living as a sign painter\, a seemingly innocent occupation. His craft is needed during every regime—the authoritarian Thirties\, the Communism that followed\, and Nazism. Ansis is compelled to cooperate. He paints the signs of the city green\, later replaced by red\, and finally brown. But then he gets caught up in a love triangle. While being in love with a Jewish girl named Zisla\, whom he cannot marry for religious and social reasons\, he falls for a Latvian girl\, who quickly captures his heart. Historical events turn the perspective of relationships upside down as Zisla\, the daughter of a rich merchant\, turns into a class enemy—a communist. Ansis’s relationship with both women becomes explosive after Zisla falls victim to Nazi persecution. Follow Ansis’ journey in The Sign Painter (2021\, Latvian with English subtitles)\, a new film from Latvian director Viesturs Kairišs.

His grandmother worked as a maid at the Waldorf Astoria in midtown Manhattan\, his father was a New York City cop and Bob was accepted to Fordham University on a track and field scholarship. O’Shea’s success on Wall Street is the epitome of the American dream. He was offered partnership at Goldman Sachs at age 29\, making him the second-youngest partner in the firm’s history. Then\, as a second act\, O’Shea co-founded Silver Point Capital\, a credit and special situations hedge fund\, in 2002. He subsequently grew the firm from $120 million in assets under management to $15 billion. Topics will include his career and keys to his success\, his views of the current credit markets and his advice for students and young professionals on how to build successful careers in credit. SUMMARY:Boris Lurie: Nothing To Do But To Try
DESCRIPTION:Boris Lurie: Nothing To Do But To Try is a first-of-its-kind exhibition on the 20th-century artist and Holocaust survivor Boris Lurie. Centered around his earliest work\, the so-called War Series\, as well as never-before-exhibited objects and ephemera from Lurie’s personal archive\, the exhibition presents a portrait of an artist reckoning with devastating trauma\, haunting memories\, and an elusive\, lifelong quest for freedom. In drawing together artistic practice and historical chronicle\, Boris Lurie: Nothing To Do But To Try is fertile new territory for the Museum of Jewish Heritage\, offering a survivor’s searing visual testimony within a significant art historical context. The Museum is open Wednesday\, Thursday\, and Sunday from 11 AM – 7 PM ET through October 17. The Museum is closed on Jewish holidays and on Thanksgiving. As of October 18\, the Museum will be open Sunday and Wednesday: 10 AM to 5 PM; Thursday\, 10 AM to 8 PM; and Friday\, 10 AM to 3 PM.

SUMMARY:Native New York
DESCRIPTION:Native New York journeys through city and state to explore the question “What makes New York a Native place?” The exhibition encompasses 12 places in present-day New York\, introducing visitors to the Native nations that call the region home. Stretching from Long Island through New York City and on toward Niagara Falls\, it covers pre–Revolutionary War exchanges through contemporary events. From Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) ironworkers who helped build Manhattan’s iconic skyscrapers to Lenape (Delaware) teens visiting their ancestral home\, stories of Native New Yorkers provide an expanded understanding of the region’s history and reveal that New York is—and always has been—a Native place.
