SUMMARY:Ling Shuhua: Her life and Place in the World Literature
DESCRIPTION:A prominent writer of the 20th-century China\, Ling Shuhua was active between the 1920s and the 1950s with a host of influential publications of short stories\, essays\, translations\, and a memoir that firmly established her foremost position in modern Chinese literature. Since most of her short stories were first published in Western journals\, her fame as a diaspora female writer also extended beyond China. Through a transnational literary friendship with Virginia Woolf\, Ling Shuhua entered the Bloomsbury circle\, a constellation of writers\, intellectuals\, philosophers and artists based in London. Woolf held Ling in high regard for her brilliance and originality and labeled her as “the Chinese Katherine Mansfield”. The Renwen Society presents a lecture on Ling Shuhua on April 9 by Prof. Lin Xiaoxia\, a scholar who specializes in the study of the famous Chinese writer. With an introduction to Ling Shuhua’s extraordinary life during the turbulent and transitional era in the first half of the 20th-century China\, Prof. Lin will explore Ling Shuhua’s significant and pioneering contribution to the construction of a world literary theory from a Chinese lens.

DESCRIPTION:More than 80% of Greek Jews were murdered during the Holocaust. Among them were the father\, sister\, mother\, and baby brother of Solomon Kofinas\, a survivor from Athens and a leader of Kehilah Kedosha Janina (KKJ)\, New York’s Greek synagogue. Kofinas was born in 1936 in Athens. After the Nazi invasion of Greece in 1941\, Kofinas and his older brother fled to the outskirts of the city\, where they hid with the help of Greek Orthodox Christians and later with distant family members. They never saw their immediate family again. In 1955\, Kofinas emigrated to New York\, where he married another Holocaust survivor and started a family of his own. Now a grandfather and great-grandfather\, he has served as a gabbai and lay leader at KKJ for more than 50 years. Join the Museum and KKJ for a program with Kofinas exploring his story of loss\, survival\, and rescue in Greece.

DESCRIPTION:The third session of the Construction History series focuses on Facades. Steel frames freed exterior walls from structural duties\, allowing architects new freedom to develop facades that could respond to changing functional and aesthetic criteria. Developers’ desire for efficiency and natural daylight led to thinner\, lighter walls – “veneers” in the dismissive language of early critics and “curtain walls” in the parlance of more enthusiastic designers. Electric lighting\, building materials\, and environmental controls all played roles in changing skyscraper skins in both New York and Chicago. However\, each city’s proximity to varying sources of stone\, glass\, and terra cotta – coupled with differing approaches to fire codes and the politics of local labor unions – created subtly different approaches to skyscraper facades.

SUMMARY:FIRE: Construction History in New York and Chicago
DESCRIPTION:The fourth session of the Construction History series will examine the various dimensions in which the threat of fire affected skyscraper development. Claims of “fireproof building” were regularly disproved\, often in cataclysmic fashion. Iron promised improvements over timber\, but Chicago’s Great Fire in 1871 revealed its vulnerability to collapse. Brick remained the only truly fireproof material\, but owners and designers remained frustrated by its weight and inefficiency. The advent of lightweight terra cotta allowed architects to combine ceramic’s resistance to fire with iron’s efficient strength\, leading to hybrid structures that allowed the safe exploitation of the skeletal frame. Fire also reshaped building codes\, but new regulations reflected the competing desires of owners\, tenants\, architects\, and skilled tradespersons that\, in turn\, influenced skyscraper massing and composition. Differing approaches in New York and Chicago forged subtly different solutions.

Along our route\, we will visit Paso Synagogue and the Jewish Synagogue of Libertad St.\, a Romanesque and Byzantine-style building and the oldest Jewish institution in Argentina. Join the Museum of Jewish Heritage and Our Travel Circle for a tour of the beautiful city of Buenos Aires\, which has the largest Jewish population in Latin America.

SUMMARY:German Patriots: Jewish Germans During WWI
DESCRIPTION:Germany entered World War I on August 1\, 1914 when the country declared war on Russia. 11 million German soldiers were mobilized\, 100\,000 of whom were Jewish. A number of these Jewish soldiers were honored for their service with the Iron Cross. In addition\, many German Jews supported the war effort at home along with their neighbors. This service and dedication were soon disregarded\, but World War I efforts are an essential part of the German Jewish story. Showcasing artifacts from the Museum’s collection\, we will explore these efforts and experiences with scholars Dr. Michael Geheran\, Dr. Jason Crouthamel\, Dr. Julia B. Köhne\, and Dr. Tim Grady\, moderator Ralph Blumenthal\, and the Museum’s Curatorial Research Assistant Rebecca Frank.

DESCRIPTION:Dream of the Red Chamber (紅樓夢)\, one of China’s four great classic novels\, tells the story of the rise and decline a wealthy imperial Chinese family\, and by extension\, the rise and decline of the Qing dynasty itself. The novel was adapted as an English-language Opera composed by Bright Sheng with libretto by Sheng and David Henry Hwang\, which premiered at the San Francisco Opera in 2016. On April 21\, join composer Bright Sheng and Tony Award winner David Henry Hwang to explore the world of their Dream of the Red Chamber which returns to the San Francisco Opera House this June. Sheng and Hwang\, in conversation with Ann Chih Lin\, Director of the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies at the University of Michigan\, will share what it takes to adapt this rich and complex world to a different medium\, and why this story still resonates with readers and viewers alike more than two centuries after it was first written.
