DESCRIPTION:A Question of Survival (55 minutes\, English\, subtitles available) is an eye-opening portrait of three Bulgarian Jews—Chaim Zemach\, a cellist; Robert Bakish\, an engineer; and Misha Avramoff\, a social worker on Manhattan’s Lower East Side—as they struggle to place their unusual experiences during World War II into the more common narrative of the Holocaust. Chaim\, Robert\, and Misha were children and young adults when Bulgaria’s pro-Nazi regime planned\, and then cancelled\, the deportation of the country’s 48\,000 Jews. The film explores the complex legacy of the Holocaust in the Balkans through their eyes and through their questions about the term “survivor.” Join the Museum for a special screening of A Question of Survival followed by a live discussion with the film’s director Elka Nikolova. The screening and discussion will occur both virtually and in person in the Museum’s Edmond J. Safra Hall.

DESCRIPTION:Zoom lecture. On the stormy night of August 29\, 1776\, the Continental Army faced capture or annihilation after losing the Battle of Brooklyn. The fate of the Revolution rested upon the shoulders of the soldier-mariners from Marblehead\, Massachusetts\, who saved the army by navigating the treacherous waters of the river the Manhattan. White\, Black\, Hispanic\, and Native American\, this uniquely diverse group of soldiers set an inclusive standard the US Army would not reach again for more than 170 years. In this lecture\, Patrick O’Donnell discusses how the Marbleheaders repeatedly altered the course of events during the Revolution—from forming the elite Guard that protected General Washington to ferrying Continental forces across the Delaware River on Christmas night of 1776.

Starting at The Skyscraper Museum\, across the street from Wagner Park\, we will explore the landmarks that anchor the new neighborhood built on landfill that covered the old finger piers of the working waterfront. Join us for a walk that explores the history of the piers and parks of Battery Park City. After we consider life above and below the piers\, kids will make a group drawing on a large roll of paper of an imaginary pier and enliven it with fish and boats they will make of colored paper and popsicle sticks. DESCRIPTION:The 18th-century novel The Story of the Stone by Cao Xueqin is a bildungsroman\, a tale of a battle between the flesh and the spirit\, a mixture of mysticism\, romanticism\, realism and fatalism\, a record of Taoist-Buddhist disenchantment and enlightenment\, and a critique of a society abiding by the rules of Confucianism\, and a novel of social commentary. It is a literary cri de coeur both celebrating the golden\, languorous days of youth and lamenting the inevitability of their passing\, and the pain and suffering all humans are doomed to endure – an eternal theme in literature. (Stone is the first important novel in Chinese literature with dark endings for almost all the main characters\, and in which the hero and his beloved not living happily ever after.) It is a book of manners and observations\, chronicling in meticulous details the glory and decay of an aristocratic family and the roots of this glory and decay in the social and historical confines of the early 18th century China during the last great flowering of the Chinese culture. At this lecture\, Mr. Ben Wang\, Senior Lecturer at China Institute and Co-Chair of the Renwen Society\, will focus his talk on the clarification\, or de-mystification\, of the two topics that were seldom\, if ever\, discussed or studied in the past. They are: 1. The chronological order in which the story of Stone is played out\, and 2. The order in which the 12 ladies\, heroines of the story\, appear in the poems and rebuses that both describe subtly and enigmatically their respective lives and foretell their different but equally fatal and tragic endings.
