SUMMARY:“I Am André” Book Talk
DESCRIPTION:Diana Mara Henry’s I Am André is an amazing real-life story of espionage\, of courage and resistance\, and of friendship and love. It pulls back the veil on the hidden history of the struggle for the identity of the Resistance in France. The life of ‘André’ Joseph Scheinmann is more intriguing and compelling than any work of fiction.

SUMMARY:Cloaked Crusader: Lecture and Wine Tasting - Liberty 250® Program
DESCRIPTION:Come in and warm up from the cold with a Colonial style mulled wine as we discuss and celebrate the sequential art (comic book) of George Washington. Join author Renee Witterstaetter* as she presents on her book\, Cloaked Crusader: George Washington in Comics and Pop Culture\, looking at the visage of Washington in everything from tavern signs to comic books to movies\, over the past 250 years. This lively presentation will be preceded by a wine tasting with offerings from Brotherhood Winery out of Washingtonville\, New York\, fittingly enough. To round out the evening\, we will also have caricature artist Edward Murr on hand to make you an art creation yourself.

SUMMARY:Road to Nowhere: How a Highway Map Wrecked Baltimore
DESCRIPTION:In her new book\, Road to Nowhere: How a Highway Map Wrecked Baltimore\, historian Emily Lieb describes the Baltimore suburb of Rosemont\, which in the 1950s was a vibrant Black middle-class neighborhood of rowhouses and small businesses. By the end of the decade\, Rosemont was effectively destroyed by plans for an expressway that was planned\, but never completed. Lieb’s detailed research and analysis clarifies the practices of blockbusting\, redlining\, and prejudicial lending\, and highlights these patterns at work in a single neighborhood. Her absorbing story of the interwoven tragedies caused by urban renewal and transportation policy and their lasting effects on racial inequalities in housing\, education\, jobs\, and health clearly describes both a local history and a national problem.

SUMMARY:Once There Was a Town: The Memory Books of a Lost Jewish World” Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:By the close of World War II\, six million Jews had been erased from the face of the earth. Those who eluded death had lost their homes\, families\, and entire way of life. SUMMARY:American Presidents in New York: It Happened Here
DESCRIPTION:Symposioum. Every American President passed through New York City. Some were born here such as Theodore Roosevelt. Some lived here including Herbert Hoover who spent his post Presidential years residing in the Presidential Suite at the Waldorf Astoria. Some were married here. In 1844\, for instance\, John Tyler wed Julia Gardiner at the Church of the Ascension on 5th Avenue & 10th Street. Some worked here. Chester Arthur practiced law in New York first before he was appointed the Collector of the Port of New York\, a position which actually paid more than the presidency. Some received medical care here. Grover Cleveland was operated on for cancer of the jaw on a yacht off of Pier A. Some like Ulysses S Grant went bankrupt here. Some launched their candidacy here. Abraham Lincoln gave the famous speech at Cooper Union that launched his candidacy and sadly returned a few years later in a casket to City Hall to terminate it. The appropriate place to celebrate President’s Day is\, of course\, Federal Hall\, our first capital whose balcony was the site of Washington’s inauguration.

SUMMARY:Immigrant Stories Film Series: Pressure
DESCRIPTION:Immigrant Stories is a collection of films that illustrate the immigrant experience as it progresses along the generations. Free popcorn will be served\, and a discussion will follow the screenings. Pressure (Horace Ové\,1976\, 136 minutes) is a film about Tony\, a second-generation British-born Black teenager of Trinidadian descent\, who struggles to find his place in 1970s London. Caught between his parents’ desire for assimilation and his brother’s Black Power activism\, his growing frustration with institutional racism and unemployment leads him towards radicalization\, exploring the identity crisis of a generation caught between two cultures. Pressure was the first British feature to be written and directed by a Black filmmaker and the first to focus on the perspective of Black characters. The Guardian said\, “Pressure is vigorous and rough-hewn and Ové lays down the broad brushstrokes with compulsive energy. It has the punchy quality of a 21st-century graphic novel\, eagerly tackling Black Power and social realism\, mixing comedy\, tragedy and irony.”

SUMMARY:Black History Month Celebration: Architecture of the Harlem Renaissance
DESCRIPTION:100 years ago\, Black artists\, architects\, and activists of the Harlem Renaissance defined a cultural movement that celebrated and fought for civil rights in the heart of New York City. In the lively uptown neighborhood\, many forms of artistic expression – jazz poetry\, musical theater\, literature\, and architecture – energized culture. Join us to learn about art and architecture of the Harlem Renaissance\, including spaces like the Apollo theater and Minton’s Playhouse. We’ll then create collages using cutouts of New York buildings\, art pieces\, and literature from the Renaissance\, inspired by African American artist\, Romare Bearden. All ages welcome!
