SUMMARY:The Black Skyscraper: Architecture and the Perception of Race
DESCRIPTION:Skyscraper Museum webinar. In her book The Black Skyscraper: Architecture and the Perception of Race (JHUP\, 2019)\, Adrienne Brown examines works produced by writers\, painters\, architects\, and laborers who grappled with the early skyscraper’s outsized and disorienting dimensions. She explores its effects on how race was seen\, read\, and sensed at the turn of the twentieth century. A highly interdisciplinary work\, The Black Skyscraper breaks new ground in analyzing the influence of race on modern architectural design\, as well as considering the effects of these designs on the experience and perception of race.

Dr. Irit Felsen is a clinical psychologist trained at Yale University and in Germany and Israel. She has seen these types of cumulative wounds firsthand\, as a researcher focused on the long-term effects of intergenerational trauma and a clinician with extensive experience working with Holocaust survivors and their families. Join Dr. Felsen for a program exploring historical trauma and cultural healing with experts from Jewish\, American Indian\, and African American communities.

SUMMARY:“Love It Was Not” Screening And Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Flamboyant and full of life\, Jewish prisoner Helena Citron found herself the subject of an unlikely affection at Auschwitz: Franz Wunsch\, a high-ranking SS officer who fell in love with Helena and her magnetic singing voice. Their forbidden relationship lasted until her miraculous liberation. Thirty years later\, a letter arrived from Wunsch’s wife begging Helena to testify on Wunsch’s behalf in an Austrian court. She was faced with an impossible decision: should she help the man who brutalized so many lives\, but saved hers\, along with some of the people closest to her? Follow her journey in Love It Was Not\, a new film from Israeli director Maya Sarfaty and Austrian-Israeli producing team Nir Sa’ar and Kurt Langbein (distributed by Greenwich Entertainment). The film premiered at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) in 2020 and won best feature film at Docaviv. This exclusive program will feature a panel discussion with Sarfaty and Langbein\, moderated by Columbia University film professor Annette Insdorf. Attendees will also receive a private link to screen the film during the week before the discussion.

SUMMARY:Washington’s End: The Final Years and Forgotten Struggle
DESCRIPTION:After eight years of holding office\, George Washington stepped down from the presidency. Embittered by partisan criticism and eager to return to his farm\, Washington assumed a role for which there was no precedent at a time when the kings across the ocean often yielded their crowns only upon losing their heads. Horn discusses the astonishing true story of George Washington’s forgotten last years—the personalities\, plotting\, and private torment that unraveled America’s first post-presidency.

SUMMARY:The Imperial Examination System in China and the Imperial Examination Museum of China in Nanjing
DESCRIPTION:Sometimes referred to as “the 5th invention of China”\, the civil service examination system in imperial China was designed to select candidates for the state bureaucracy. This system was in place between 650 CE and 1905\, making it the world’s longest-lasting meritocracy. In the course of over 1200 years\, the examination system helped shape China’s intellectual\, cultural\, political\, and religious life\, giving rise to a unique gentry class of scholar-bureaucrats. The Chinese civil examination system was adopted by a number of neighboring Asian countries\, such as Vietnam\, Korea and Japan\, in one form or another. To help understand this important institution in traditional China\, the Renwen Society presents a lecture on May 22 by Ms. Feng Jiahong\, President of the Imperial Examination Museum of China in Nanjing\, on the history\, process and significance of the imperial examinations. The Imperial Examination Museum of China in Nanjing was built on the former site of the largest imperial examination center in China. The rare archives\, records\, actual examination papers as well as the breathtaking architecture of the museum will also be introduced in the lecture.

SUMMARY:“X Troop” Book Talk
DESCRIPTION:In June 1942\, Winston Churchill and his chief of staff devised an unusual plan: a new commando unit made up of Jewish refugees in the United Kingdom. Called “X Troop\,” the unit included a motley group of intellectuals\, artists\, and athletes from Germany and Austria. Many had lost their families and homes\, and would stop at nothing to defeat the Nazis. The top-secret unit is the subject of Dr. Leah Garrett’s new book X Troop: The Secret Jewish Commandos of World War II\, scheduled for release on May 25\, 2021. Drawing on extensive original research\, including interviews with the last surviving members\, Garrett follows this unique band of brothers from Germany to England and back again\, with stops at British internment camps\, the beaches of Normandy\, the battlefields of Italy and Holland\, and the hellscape of Terezin concentration camp—the scene of one of the most dramatic\, untold rescues of the war. Join the Museum for a book launch program with Garrett. She’ll be in conversation with Kim Masters\, veteran entertainment journalist\, editor-at-large of The Hollywood Reporter\, and host of KCRW’s The Business whose father Peter Masters was a member of the X Troop.

SUMMARY:Psychedelics for the Treatment of Depression and Psychiatric Disorders
DESCRIPTION:Currently the FDA categorizes psychedelics such as LSD and psilocybin as Schedule I drugs\, indicating that these substances have no medical benefits. Despite this classification\, a resurgence of research has demonstrated therapeutic benefits of psychedelics for treatment of psychiatric disorders. These exciting findings have resulted in a paradigm shift for treatment-resistant psychiatric conditions\, along with increased public interest and efforts to legalize psychedelics for medicinal use. This virtual conversation will bring together leading scientists in the fields of pharmacology\, neuroscience\, and psychiatry to discuss how psychedelics work in the brain to produce therapeutic benefits for depression and other mood disorders. The role of psychotherapy in tandem with the psychedelic experience will also be explored.
