SUMMARY:Print Your Own Valentine's Day Card
DESCRIPTION:Hands-on tour that will transport you and your kids into the fascinating world of 19th century sailors. In addition to getting to raise the sail\, the tour will also show the young people in your life how sailors worked and lived aboard a 19th century cargo sailing ship—from the captain to the ship’s officers\, cooks\, and crew. On your visit\, you will explore the main deck that features the newly restored forecastle\, where the crew bunked; the galley\, where meals were prepared; the saloon\, which acted as the captain’s living room and the ship’s office in port; and the quarterdeck\, where you can man the helm\, turn the ships wheel\, and learn about the capstan. You will also get a look into the vast cargo hold\, which stored bulk cargo on Wavertree’s many journeys to distant ports around the globe during her 24-year sailing career. Advanced registration is required for sail raising tours as space is limited. All children must be accompanied by an adult; maximum four children per adult. Repeated at 2pm and 4pm.

SUMMARY:Mozart Requiem
DESCRIPTION:Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s final composition\, Requiem\, was finished after his death by his student Franz Xaver Süssmayr. According to his wife\, Constanze Mozart\, the ailing composer had come to believe he was writing the piece\, initially commissioned by a German count\, to be played at his own funeral — and indeed some sections were. Requiem was later performed at the funerals and commemorative services of Ludwig van Beethoven\, Joseph Haydn\, and Frédéric Chopin. Centuries later in 1960\, “scraps of paper” containing Mozart’s unrealized ideas were discovered\, prompting new versions of the Requiem. Join us for Robert Levin’s scholarly completion of this celebrated and emotionally stirring choral masterpiece\, featuring Downtown Voices with The Choir of Trinity Wall Street.

SUMMARY:Poetry of Enslavement and the African Burial Ground
DESCRIPTION:Join the Seaport Museum for an enlightening afternoon with esteemed poet David Mills. Together\, we will explore the profound themes of his award-winning book of poems\, Boneyarn\, which is the first book of poetry about the history of slavery in New York City. During the program\, Mills will read a selection of his poems and shed light on the African Burial Ground—the oldest and largest slave cemetery in the United States––which is located just blocks away from the Museum. Operating from 1712 to 1795\, this burial ground is the resting place of 15\,000 enslaved and free Blacks\, along with some Native Americans and impoverished white people. Mills’ groundbreaking work captures the stories of those who worked as cooks\, childhood chimney sweeps\, laborers on the docks near South Street Seaport\, participants in the Revolutionary War\, and individuals who maintained African traditions in burial practices. Don’t miss this unique event where Mills will creatively “excavate” the tragedies and triumphs of New York’s enslaved and free Black community. Advanced registration is suggested for this free event but walkups will be accommodated as possible. A reception with complimentary beverages will follow. Boneyarn will be available for purchase at the event.
