SUMMARY:FRAMES: Construction History in New York and Chicago
DESCRIPTION:The second session of the Construction History series concentrates on Frames and the evolution of metal-cage construction in each city.  Chicago has claimed the “invention” of steel-skeleton construction\, which historians often call “the Chicago frame.” In New York\, building codes and concerns about fire discouraged the use of skeleton frames until after 1892\, so alternative\, hybrid systems developed. Tom Leslie and Don Friedman will examine these and other issues. Chicago and New York offered a handful of very different preconditions that influenced the way skyscrapers were designed and built in the two cities. Chicago’s murky soil forced engineers to carefully parse their structures into point supports and broad\, snowshoe-like pads\, which suggested structures above could be thought of as more skeletal frames than continuous walls. The city’s large\, regular lot sizes also allowed a regularity in structural grids\, and its laissez-faire politics permitted thinner walls than other\, eastern cities—at least through 1893\, after which unions and builders began a pitched battle over the city’s building code.

Our walk begins in Roman times\, when Jews and Christians were both viewed as foreigners and strangers to the pagan Roman Empire. SUMMARY:Stories Survive: Ann Kliger Axelrod
DESCRIPTION:April’s Stories Survive program features Ann Kliger Axelrod. Ann was born Elizabeth Benedikt on August 25\, 1929 in Budapest\, Hungary. On March 18\, 1944\, when Ann was 14 years old\, the Nazis invaded Hungary and forced Jews to obey the degrading laws that were already in place in Germany. On April 5\, the photo of Ann above was taken by Hungarians at German headquarters in Budapest for her identification. April 5 was also the date when the Jewish Hungarian labor battalions\, including Ann’s brother Lazlo\, were sent to the Russian front. It was the last day that Ann saw her brother. Ann became one of a number of teenage Jewish girls issued a “schutzpasse” by Raoul Wallenberg and put up in a Swedish safe house. After escaping from a transport to Bergen-Belsen with other children\, Ann went to the Budapest ghetto\, where she received false papers from a family friend. Using these papers\, Ann was able to leave the ghetto on November 1944\, and hid with her mother in a bombed-out hotel until Budapest was liberated by the Russians. After the war\, Ann met her husband Shaja Kliger in a bread line in Budapest. They moved to Italy\, where her son Jack\, who is now President of the Museum\, and her daughter Lea were born. In 1948 the family moved to the United States. Here the family lived in Brooklyn\, New York\, where she had her third child\, Stella. Ann now has four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Ann will be interviewed by Rick Salomon\, a co-founder of the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center.

TERRITORY: The Island Remembers will premiere as a week-long multimedia installation that will take over Gibney’s Studio Y. From April 7-9\, the installation will be activated with three nights of rituals\, performance\, and audience-interactive actions. Prior to activations\, visitors are invited to the installation at no cost on April 5-9 from 12-3pm EDT. With guided instruction\, installation visitors can give offerings to altars within the space to acknowledge the land and prepare it for evening activations.

SUMMARY:Ling Shuhua: Her life and Place in the World Literature
DESCRIPTION:A prominent writer of the 20th-century China\, Ling Shuhua was active between the 1920s and the 1950s with a host of influential publications of short stories\, essays\, translations\, and a memoir that firmly established her foremost position in modern Chinese literature. Since most of her short stories were first published in Western journals\, her fame as a diaspora female writer also extended beyond China. Through a transnational literary friendship with Virginia Woolf\, Ling Shuhua entered the Bloomsbury circle\, a constellation of writers\, intellectuals\, philosophers and artists based in London. Woolf held Ling in high regard for her brilliance and originality and labeled her as “the Chinese Katherine Mansfield”. The Renwen Society presents a lecture on Ling Shuhua on April 9 by Prof. Lin Xiaoxia\, a scholar who specializes in the study of the famous Chinese writer. With an introduction to Ling Shuhua’s extraordinary life during the turbulent and transitional era in the first half of the 20th-century China\, Prof. Lin will explore Ling Shuhua’s significant and pioneering contribution to the construction of a world literary theory from a Chinese lens.

DESCRIPTION:Through the eyes and camera of our guide Adam\, explore off-the-beaten path parts of the Jewish quarter of Pest\, one of the most interesting parts of Budapest’s city center. Learn the in-depth stories of the historical area including Stolpersteine\, the former children’s republic of Gaudiopolis\, and some micro-stories from everyday life of middle-class Jewish families. We will also have special access to the Ghetto Wall Memorial\, where we will see the last remaining section of the WWII ghetto’s wall hiding in the courtyard of an abandoned residential building. Only licensed guides have access\, and no groups are permitted in this hidden courtyard. Join the Museum of Jewish Heritage and Our Travel Circle for a deeper look into the rich culture of the Hungarian Jewish community. This tour will build upon September’s Budapest tour\, but it is not required to have attended the previous tour.

SUMMARY:Stories Survive: Solomon Kofinas
DESCRIPTION:More than 80% of Greek Jews were murdered during the Holocaust. Among them were the father\, sister\, mother\, and baby brother of Solomon Kofinas\, a survivor from Athens and a leader of Kehilah Kedosha Janina (KKJ)\, New York’s Greek synagogue. Kofinas was born in 1936 in Athens. After the Nazi invasion of Greece in 1941\, Kofinas and his older brother fled to the outskirts of the city\, where they hid with the help of Greek Orthodox Christians and later with distant family members. They never saw their immediate family again. In 1955\, Kofinas emigrated to New York\, where he married another Holocaust survivor and started a family of his own. Now a grandfather and great-grandfather\, he has served as a gabbai and lay leader at KKJ for more than 50 years. Join the Museum and KKJ for a program with Kofinas exploring his story of loss\, survival\, and rescue in Greece.
