SUMMARY:The Peking Express –The Bandits Who Stole a Train\, Stunned the West\, and Broke the Republic of China
DESCRIPTION:In May 1923\, when Shanghai publisher and Chicago Tribune reporter John Benjamin Powell bought a first-class ticket for the Peking Express\, he pictured an idyllic overnight journey on a brand-new train of unprecedented luxury—exactly what the advertisements promised. Seeing his fellow passengers\, including the mysterious Italian lawyer Giuseppe Musso (a confidante of Mussolini and lawyer for the opium trade); American heiress Lucy Aldrich\, sister-in-law of John D. Rockefeller\, Jr.; and other prominent travelers\, he was certain it would be the trip of a lifetime. He was right\, but for reasons he could not have guessed. The Peking Express\, brilliantly recreated with new and original research\, tells the unforgettable true story of a clash that shocked the world—becoming so celebrated that it inspired several Hollywood movies—and set the course for China’s two-decade civil war.

SUMMARY:Spring Theater with The Braid: Remembrance of Things Present
DESCRIPTION:In person and livestreamed. The story of the Holocaust continues far past liberation. Those born in the generations that followed especially feel the deep and resounding imprint in all aspects of their lives. In these surprisingly inspiring and heart-opening stories\, we learn how the daughter of a French resistance fighter must choose between a life of activism and her own survival. We see how the son and grandson of Tuvia Bielsky\, leader of the partisans\, contend with the legacy of a hero. We’ll see the unexpected fear one grandson feels as he visits his family’s home in Germany\, 65 years after his family fled the Nazis. As one daughter wonders if the price of encouraging her father to give testimony is greater than the benefit. Victims of the Holocaust are mourned\, and those who survived have imprinted the next generations in innumerable ways.

SUMMARY:A Conversation with Lu Wei on Chinese Cinema: Past\, Present and Future
DESCRIPTION:Screenwriter Lu Wei\, often referred to as “China’s top screenwriter\,” is the mastermind behind the initial drafts and storylines of some of the most iconic films in Chinese cinema\, including “Farewell My Concubine\,” “To Live\,” “Qin Song\,” “Shuangqi Zhen Daoke\,” and “Red Cherry.” Despite his instrumental contributions to these films\, Lu Wei has remained relatively unknown to the general public. However\, with the recent publication of his memoir\, “The Secrets of Film Screenwriting\,” Lu Wei sheds light on his creative process and the behind-the-scenes work that went into the making of some of China’s most beloved films. In this memoir\, Lu Wei specifically delves into the adaptation process of “Farewell My Concubine” and “To Live\,” offering a unique insight into the creative process of two of the most significant films in Chinese cinema. The Renwen Society will present an interview on April 22 with Mr. Lu by Mr. Woody Mu to talk about his views\, aspirations\, and wishes regarding Chinese cinema\, and discuss the current issues of Chinese cinema.

SUMMARY:“Maus Now”: Spiegelman’s Graphic Novel and the Present Tense
DESCRIPTION:Art Spiegelman’s Maus remains as poignantly relevant today as it was when it was first published serially beginning in 1980\, and then in two book volumes in 1986 and 1991. Among many other reasons for Maus’ present cultural impact\, Hillary Chute argues that Spiegelman’s comics narrative reveals the capacity of the medium as a form to register the persistence of history and to function as a mode of resistance to today’s rising fascism. Chute’s talk is in part drawn from her 2022 edited collection from Pantheon\, Maus Now: Selected Writing.

SUMMARY:Easy Money: American Puritans and the Invention of Modern Currency
DESCRIPTION:Economists endlessly debate the nature of legal tender monetary systems—coins and bills issued by a government or other authority. Yet the origins of these currencies have received little attention. Dror Goldberg tells the story of modern money in North America through the Massachusetts colony during the 17th century. As the young settlement transitioned to self-governance and its economy grew\, the need to formalize a smooth exchange emerged. Printing local money followed. Easy Money illustrates how colonists invented contemporary currency by shifting its foundation from intrinsically valuable goods—such as silver—to the taxation of the state. Goldberg traces how this structure grew into a worldwide system in which\, monetarily\, we are all Massachusetts. Weaving economics\, law\, and American history\, Easy Money is a new touchstone in the story of monetary systems.
