SUMMARY:Buried Beneath the City: An Archaeological History of New York
DESCRIPTION:Book presentation. Bits and pieces of the lives led long before the age of skyscrapers are scattered throughout New York City\, found in backyards\, construction sites\, street beds\, and parks. Indigenous tools used thousands of years ago; wine jugs from a seventeenth-century tavern; a teapot from Seneca Village\, the nineteenth-century Black settlement displaced by Central Park; raspberry seeds sown in backyard Brooklyn gardens—these everyday objects are windows into the city’s forgotten history. Buried Beneath the City uses urban archaeology to retell the history of New York\, from the deeper layers of the past to the topsoil of recent events.

SUMMARY:Sustainable: Moving Beyond ESG to Impact Investing
DESCRIPTION:The global economy is at a crossroads. Can finance fix it? Proponents of environmental\, social and governance (ESG) investing say yes. They claim that new financial strategies that consider all stakeholders are essential tools for addressing runaway carbon emissions and stark income inequality\, among other ills. ESG-integrated investments already encompass more than $120 trillion in financial assets. Is this approach really leading to better social and environmental outcomes for all? If not\, how can it be improved? In Sustainable\, a finance-industry veteran offers an insider’s look at the promises\, prospects and limitations of ESG investing and provides comprehensive solutions that would promote more optimal outcomes. Terrence Keeley argues that both activist and C-suite advocates have been overly optimistic about what ESG can accomplish. Divestment threats are ineffective tools for altering corporate behavior\, and verifiably “good” companies do not systematically generate great returns. Most importantly\, business and finance cannot achieve inclusive\, sustainable growth on their own: regulators\, public policies\, civil society and individuals must all play specific\, complementary roles to shape the future we need.

SUMMARY:The Monumental Undertaking: The Capital Plan of Nanjing
DESCRIPTION:In the wake of the reunification of China\, the Nationalist government initiated a comprehensive planning proposal\, referred to as “the Capital Plan”\, to reconstruct the war-torn city of Nanjing into a modern capital. With the participation of many first-generation architects returning from Europe\, the US and Japan\, this monumental project brought a brand-new landscape to Nanjing as a modern city. The architectural masterpieces emerging from the project dotted the city in their varied forms and styles\, representing the highest standards of Chinese architecture of the time. As a result\, the city itself had become a grand museum of modern architecture\, contributing to “the beauty of Nanjing that still resonates in China”\, in the words of CNN. Dr. Wang Xiaoqian\, a renowned scholar and architect\, will relate the stories of the capital plan as well as the course and characteristics of urban construction and architectural development of Nanjing from 1912 to 1949.

SUMMARY:Annual Great Crashes Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:This unique walking tour\, now in its 34th year\, is the only regularly-scheduled event that commemorates the Great Crash of 1929\, the Panic of 1907 and the 1987 stock market collapse. It also delves into the political\, financial\, real estate and architectural history of Wall Street and New York City. The tour shows that despite such adversities as the Great Fires of 1776 and 1835\, financial panics of the 19th century\, the 1920 Wall Street explosion\, the Crash of 1929\, the stock market collapse of 1987\, the September 11\, 2001 terrorist attack and the financial crisis of 2008\, New York and Wall Street have always recovered their position as the world’s financial capital. James S. Kaplan\, an attorney and political historian\, and Richard M. Warshauer\, a commercial real estate executive and Wall Street aficionado\, will conduct the tour under the auspices of the Museum of American Finance. Tour meets outside the US Custom House and costs $15 per person; tickets must be purchased at least 24 hours in advance.

SUMMARY:Residential Rising\, Lower Manhattan Since 9/11
DESCRIPTION:In the 21 years since 9/11\, lower Manhattan has more than doubled its residential population\, from nearly 40\,000 to more than 82\,000. Downtown’s evolution into a mixed residential neighborhood – which was initiated by the City in the mid-1990s\, but catastrophically interrupted in 2001\, as well as by the financial crisis of 2008 and Superstorm Sandy in 2012 – has been a story as much about the conversion of older office buildings into apartments as about new construction. Led by Museum Director Carol Willis\, the walking tour will cover blocks from City Hall Park\, a perfect vantage to admire the new stand-out residential towers\, and wind south through the Financial District to Wall Street\, where Art Deco office buildings have been converted to hundreds of small rental apartments with lavish amenity spaces. Along the way\, we will discuss the zoning changes\, financing incentives\, and historic preservation and development strategies that have produced a new neighborhood. Tour duration is around 60 minutes. The tour will meet at 1pm in the public plaza of 30 Park Place\, midblock on Park Place between Broadway and Church St. The last stop of the tour will be at Wall Street and Broadway.

SUMMARY:IN | REP: Introspection (An Evening of Works) by Sidra Bell Dance New York
DESCRIPTION:Gibney opens its 2022-23 presenting season at Gibney Center with the New York premiere of Sidra Bell Dance New York’s IN | REP: Introspection (An Evening of Works). Marking the 20th anniversary of her company\, Sidra Bell Dance New York (SBDNY)\, the 65-minute program seamlessly connects excerpts from works choreographed by Bell for her company since its 2001 founding. The program has been described as “hypnotically seductive” and “brilliant and impressive\,” Bell’s aesthetic rings of “Pina Bausch\, fashion\, and Harlem’s ballrooms” in a unique\, visionary style that draws in audiences\, deeply. Her distinctive\, hyperkinetic movement and dramatic brilliance hone-in on the human psyche\, questions of identity and the shape of time. Sidra Bell\, who was named Gibney’s inaugural Artist-In-Residence (AiR) in July 2022\, is an acclaimed and prolific choreographer. Her work has been performed throughout the United States and abroad. The AiR program is a comprehensive support system for established creators that provides substantial\, diverse\, and multi-year support for a mid-career choreographer. IN | REP: Introspection is accompanied by a multimedia installation\, RETURN TO FORM: The Shape of Time\, An Installation by Sidra Bell Dance New York and the SBDNY Design Team\, featuring video\, objects\, performance ephemera\, drawings\, costumes\, dreams\, texts\, palettes\, and designs from the artists of Sidra Bell Dance New York and its collaborators over the past two decades.
