SUMMARY:Ben Wang on The Story of the Stone
DESCRIPTION:The 18th-century novel The Story of the Stone by Cao Xueqin is a bildungsroman\, a tale of a battle between the flesh and the spirit\, a mixture of mysticism\, romanticism\, realism and fatalism\, a record of Taoist-Buddhist disenchantment and enlightenment\, and a critique of a society abiding by the rules of Confucianism\, and a novel of social commentary. It is a literary cri de coeur both celebrating the golden\, languorous days of youth and lamenting the inevitability of their passing\, and the pain and suffering all humans are doomed to endure – an eternal theme in literature. (Stone is the first important novel in Chinese literature with dark endings for almost all the main characters\, and in which the hero and his beloved not living happily ever after.) It is a book of manners and observations\, chronicling in meticulous details the glory and decay of an aristocratic family and the roots of this glory and decay in the social and historical confines of the early 18th century China during the last great flowering of the Chinese culture. At this lecture\, Mr. Ben Wang\, Senior Lecturer at China Institute and Co-Chair of the Renwen Society\, will focus his talk on the clarification\, or de-mystification\, of the two topics that were seldom\, if ever\, discussed or studied in the past. They are: 1. The chronological order in which the story of Stone is played out\, and 2. The order in which the 12 ladies\, heroines of the story\, appear in the poems and rebuses that both describe subtly and enigmatically their respective lives and foretell their different but equally fatal and tragic endings.

SUMMARY:Pieces of China: Melinda Liu on the Imperial Kilns
DESCRIPTION:The Daolingjian Imperial Tile kilns outside of Beijing once produced the green and yellow tiles that adorn the rooftops of the Forbidden City\, the Ming Tombs and other ancient sites. Demand remains strong\, especially when imperial-era temples are renovated. But due to anti-pollution restrictions\, the wood-burning kilns are silent; today production takes place in far-off Inner Mongolia. The stresses\, strains\, and commercial opportunities of the modern world have changed the face of this village—and all of rural China. Join us as foreign correspondent Melinda Liu\, a 30-year Beijing resident\, shares stories of the kilns and the village where she spends many weekends.

SUMMARY:Remembering the 9/11 Boatlift: America's Largest Water Evacuation
DESCRIPTION:Following the September 11 attacks in New York City\, people were unable to leave Lower Manhattan due to the closure of bridges and tunnels throughout the city. Within minutes of the first plane hitting the first tower\, multiple fireboats from the New York City Fire Department rushed the scene\, and the US Coast Guard coordinated a convoy of hundreds of merchant ships\, tugboats\, ferries and other vessels to evacuate stranded and injured victims. This extraordinary rescue was memorialized in the 2011 short documentary film Boatlift documenting the mass evacuation of more than 500\,000 civilians in just nine hours—the largest maritime evacuation conducted in the history of the United States\, moving more people from the island than even the 1940 evacuation of Allied troops from France. At this virtual event\, see the short documentary film Boatlift: An Untold Tale of 9/11 Resilience narrated by Tom Hanks\, followed by a panel discussion on the largest water evacuation in maritime history. Panelists are National Maritime Historical Society trustee emeritus RADM Richard Larrabee\, USCG (Ret.)\, USCG Safety and Security Division Chief for Sector New York John Hillin\, president of the New Jersey Sandy Hook Pilots Association Capt. Andrew McGovern\, founder of the fireboat John J. Harvey Huntley Gill\, and USCG-licensed marine engineer and author of Saved at the Seawall: Stories from the September 11 Boat Lift Jessica DuLong.
