SUMMARY:Annual Great Crashes Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Relive the Great Crash of 1929 on the Museum’s annual crash-themed walking tour of Lower Manhattan. This unique walking tour\, now in its 35th year\, is the only regularly-scheduled event that commemorates the Great Crash of 1929\, the Panic of 1907 and the 1987 stock market collapse. It also delves into the political\, financial\, real estate and architectural history of Wall Street and New York City. The tour shows that despite such adversities as the Great Fires of 1776 and 1835\, financial panics of the 19th century\, the 1920 Wall Street explosion\, the Crash of 1929\, the stock market collapse of 1987\, the September 11\, 2001 terrorist attack and the financial crisis of 2008\, New York and Wall Street have always recovered their position as the world’s financial capital. Rain date is November 4\, 2023.

SUMMARY:Tove Bamberger’s Danish Rescue
DESCRIPTION:Tove Bamberger (née Schonbaum) was born in Copenhagen in 1934 and raised as a secular Jew. When the Germans invaded Denmark in April 1940\, life in the country continued largely unchanged until September 1943\, when Hitler issued a deportation order for all Danish Jews. Tove’s family\, along with 95% of Danish Jews\, fled to Sweden on a fishing boat. Tove attended a Danish school set up for the refugees in Sweden\, and when the war ended her family returned to their home in Copenhagen. There\, she married Niels Bamberger\, who had experienced the same rescue and return. In 1955\, after Tove’s high school graduation\, Tove and Niels immigrated\, settling in Washington Heights\, New York\, where they raised two daughters. Tove will discuss her story of escape and return\, her life in Sweden\, and what her life was like after World War II in this Danish Rescue Stories Survive program.

DESCRIPTION:The new film First to Stand follows Irwin Cotler\, former Canadian Minister of Justice and the current Canadian Ambassador to Combat Antisemitism\, along with his team of activists at the Raoul Wallenberg Centre as they take on the cases and causes of political prisoners and human rights activists against the world’s most repressive regimes. Cotler began fighting for freedom and justice in law school with the landmark case of Russian refusnik Natan Sharansky\, and continues to fight for human rights causes today. SUMMARY:What They Wanted Us to Know: Disinformation\, Rumors\, and Ignorance in the Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:Antisemitic disinformation was a hallmark of the Nazi regime\, from its early rise in 1933. Access to information can make the difference between life and death\, especially for the Jews of Europe during World War II. German occupiers attempted to – and largely succeeded at – controlling the flow of information through newspapers\, radio\, and the spread of false rumors. When witnesses and fugitives returned to ghettos and told their stories about the death camps\, few believed what they heard; Nazi propaganda fueled these doubts. This lecture will explore the methods Nazis used in their attempts to control their citizens during the Holocaust\, and how this history might shed light on our current information environment.

SUMMARY:Gibney Presents: 2nd Best Dance Company
DESCRIPTION:2nd Best Dance Company brings its signature style to the Gibney stage with the world premiere of The myth of forward motion (or\, The Box Dance). Physically rigorous\, sometimes virtuosic\, almost always slapstick\, this new work walks the line between dance performance and nonlinear play\, leaning into both text and movement to examine the sensation of being stuck – in a place\, a memory\, a thought pattern\, or a life that’s headed in one particular direction.

SUMMARY:McNally Jackson After Hours
DESCRIPTION:New McNally Jackson book club. In lieu of a traditional sit-down discussion we’ll mix and mingle at our Seaport beer and wine bar and discuss a new book that we’re particularly excited about\, or an older title we think is worth revisiting. This November we’re fantasizing about an endless summer and reading Spanish author Andrea Abreu’s buzzy debit\, Dogs of Summer.
