SUMMARY:“The Last Twins” Screening and Talkback
DESCRIPTION:“Heroism is presented less as a feat of preternatural bravery than a series of choices made by someone who simply refused to give up his humanity.” – Beatrice Loayza\, The New York Times. The Last Twins is the never-before-told story of an unsung hero of the Holocaust\, Erno “Zvi” Spiegel\, who risked everything to save dozens of young twins from almost certain death at Auschwitz. Under the shadow of Dr. Josef Mengele’s horrific experiments\, Spiegel used his courage\, compassion\, and ingenuity to shield the most vulnerable – the sets of twins targeted for brutal medical experimentation. Mengele put Spiegel in charge of the young boys\, but Spiegel used his position to protect and comfort the children\, all of whom had been torn from their families and subjected to inhumane tests under the constant threat of extermination. Following the camp’s liberation\, Spiegel took it upon himself to lead the surviving twin boys home\, on a dangerous six-week journey across war-torn Europe. Through first-hand testimony and archival material\, The Last Twins brings to life the voices of those who survived because of Spiegel’s defiance. It is a testament to the triumph of the human spirit\, the weight of resilience and sacrifice\, and the power of one person to make a difference\, even in humanity’s darkest hour. Following the screening of the film\, directors Perri Peltz and Matthew O’Neill will be in conversation with Spiegel’s daughter Dr. Judith Richter. Moderated by journalist Bret Stephens.

SUMMARY:“Global Approaches to the Holocaust” Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:The field of contemporary Holocaust studies is increasingly international in perspective. These approaches do not detach themselves from European history; rather\, they incorporate perspectives and voices not always considered in more traditional Holocaust studies. The new book Global Approaches to the Holocaust asks: What happens when scholars shift their focus from an exclusively European perspective of the Holocaust? What new insights are gained from exploring the impact of the Holocaust from outside the European milieu? How do countries that were not directly affected by Nazi policies of occupation and extermination remember the Holocaust? What does an expansive approach to the Holocaust entail? With essays about North and South Africa\, Mauritius\, Japan\, Argentina\, Mexico\, Chile\, the Philippines\, the United States\, Australia\, Canada\, India\, Pakistan\, Palestine\, Colombia\, New Zealand\, and more\, Global Approaches to the Holocaust seeks to create a critical voice in Holocaust studies that encompasses not only Europe but also Asia\, Africa\, South and North America\, Australia\, and the Middle East. Mark Celinscak and Mehnaz Afridi\, co-editors of Global Approaches to the Holocaust\, will be in conversation about the book with Dr. Laura B. Cohen\, Executive Director of the Harriet and Kenneth Kupfberg Holocaust Center at Queensborough Community College at the City University of New York.

SUMMARY:Pipes: Trinity Youth Chorus
DESCRIPTION:The final concert of the fall PIPES series highlights the significant role Trinity’s new organ will serve for the church’s choirs and congregation for years to come. The talented musicians of Trinity Youth Chorus sing their own adaptations of two masses: Gabriel Fauré’s Messe basse\, originally scored for upper voices\, and Maurice Duruflé’s Messe Cum Jubilo\, the composer’s last large-scale work written for baritones and a baritone soloist. Rounding out the program is a favorite: Fauré’s beautiful Cantique de Jean Racine.

SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn: On the Turtle's Back
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Camilla Townsend discusses the book On the Turtle’s Back: Stories the Lenape Told Their Grandchildren she co-authored with Nicky Kay Michael. The Lenape tribe\, also known as the Delaware Nation\, inhabited the region now comprising eastern Pennsylvania\, New Jersey\, Delaware\, and parts of New York\, Connecticut\, and Maryland for centuries. However\, America’s independence from the British displaced the tribe west to Indiana\, then Missouri\, and finally the territory that became Oklahoma. The Lenape could not carry much from their ancestral homeland\, but they ensured their stories were preserved and passed down through generations.

SUMMARY:Force of Evil
DESCRIPTION:Film screening: “Force of Evil” (1948) is Abraham Polonsky’s searing portrait of corruption and conscience in postwar New York. John Garfield stars as a Wall Street lawyer ensnared in the city’s numbers racket\, torn between moral reckoning and ruthless ambition. Shot on location in Lower Manhattan and the Bronx\, “Force of Evil” portrays New York as both a glittering cathedral of commerce and a shadowed landscape of decay. Blacklisted soon after the film’s release\, Polonsky infused the story with a political urgency and human complexity that feel startlingly contemporary. Paired with George Barnes’s evocative cinematography and the film’s lyrical\, hard-edged dialogue\, it is a modern tragedy of greed\, betrayal and the corrupted promise of the American dream. Following the screening\, film critics Imogen Sara Smith (“In Lonely Places: Film Noir Beyond the City”) and Geoffrey O’Brien (“Hardboiled America: Lurid Paperbacks and the Masters of Noir”) will discuss the film’s artistry and enduring relevance — from its politically charged origins to its influence on later generations of filmmakers who saw noir not only as style\, but as social commentary.

SUMMARY:Noirvember Film: The Breaking Point
DESCRIPTION:Each November\, movie fans celebrate the hallmark antiheroes\, femme fatales\, moral complexities\, and the stunning black & white cinematography of film noir. Free popcorn will be served\, and a discussion will follow each screening. In The Breaking Point (Michael Curtiz\, 1950\, 97 minutes) John Garfield plays Harry Morgan\, a charter boat captain who takes on dangerous cargo\, then faces criminal propositions and playful come-ons\, stretching both his morality and his marriage. Based on Ernest Hemingway’s To Have and Have Not\, Hemingway himself called it the best film adaptation of any of his books and The New York Times said “all of the character\, color and cynicism of Mr. Hemingway’s lean and hungry tale are wrapped up in this realistic picture.”
