SUMMARY:An American Renaissance: Beaux-Arts Architecture in New York City
DESCRIPTION:An American Renaissance: Beaux-Arts Architecture in New York City\, written by Phillip James Dodd with photography by Jonathan Wallen\, is a sumptuous book on an era – roughly from the 1870s to the 1930s – when New York acquired and displayed its wealth and sophistication with complete confidence. The titans of American finance and industry were patrons of the arts in their private mansions\, public institutions\, and business establishments. An American Renaissance focuses on twenty of the finest examples of Beaux-Arts architecture in the city and recalls the lives of those who commissioned\, designed\, and built them. Some of the buildings and monuments are world-renowned landmarks\, while others are more obscure and seldom visited. The opulence of the Gilded Age is stunningly captured in this oversized and extravagantly illustrated volume.

SUMMARY:The Roots of Urban Renaissance: Gentrification and the Struggle over Harlem
DESCRIPTION:With its gleaming shopping centers and refurbished row houses\, today’s Harlem bears little resemblance to the neighborhood of the midcentury urban crisis. In The Roots of Urban Renaissance: Gentrification and the Struggle over Harlem\, first published in 2017 by Harvard University Press\, Brian D. Goldstein traces Harlem’s Second Renaissance to a surprising source: the radical social movements of the 1960s that resisted city officials and fought to give Harlemites control of their own destiny. Inspired by the civil rights movement\, young activists envisioned a Harlem built by and for its low-income\, predominantly African American population. In the succeeding decades\, however\, the community-based organizations they founded came to pursue a very different goal: a neighborhood with national retailers and increasingly affluent residents.

SUMMARY:The Defeat of the British Southern Strategy to Conquer America
DESCRIPTION:In this lecture\, Ken Scarlett will discuss the British Southern Strategy for conquering America and extinguishing the American Revolution. He will discuss the role of a quisling in the framing of their base strategy and how those plans were completely defeated culminating with the forced British evacuation from Charleston\, South Carolina (Victory Day). Ken will examine General Nathanael Greene’s post-Yorktown counterinsurgency campaign to oust British occupation forces from the Lower South and reinstall elected state governments; which proved to be the final lynchpins for King George III and Parliament to end their war-gone-global and relinquish sovereignty over the declared “United States”.

SUMMARY:The Old Town Girls
DESCRIPTION:Online screening and conversation with the director. Inspired by a true incident\, Shen Yu’s debut OLD TOWN GIRLS tells a tale about how an unsustained economic boom desolates working-class communities and familial relations. Tempted by living a new life as a professional dancer in big cities\, Qu Ting bid farewell to her marriage in a decaying rust bell town\, leaving behind her infant daughter\, Shui Qing\, who’s been alienated by her dad’s new family since. Never felt equally loveable as her peers\, Shui Qing instantly gets carried away by Qu Ting’s worldly charisma and maternal attention when the two meet seventeen years later. But the high schooler is soon forced to face the reality behind her mom’s sudden reappearance and years of unglamorous survival. As dangers loom\, she decides to sacrifice everything for the slim chance of reunification. A private link to the film will be available to event registrants from March 10th to March 16th. We will invite Director Yu SHEN of The Old Town Girls and film critic Karen MA to join us in an online discussion at 7-8pm ET on March 16th\, 2023.

SUMMARY:Let the Lion Eat Straw
DESCRIPTION:Brooklyn born novelist\, poet\, educator and international speaker\, Ellease Ebele N. Oseye\, whom Maya Angelou described as “a seer of the interior landscape\,” has been teaching literature of African peoples at Pace University for 48 years. She has also taught at Borough of Manhattan Community College for twenty years. Professor Oseye’s novel\, Let the Lion Eat Straw\, honors the life of her mother\, Ellease Dozier Southerland\, musician\, mother of nine sons and six daughters. The African Burial Ground National Monument holds a sacred place in the heart of this author who listened with unbelieving ears as her mother made real the brutality of enslavement.

SUMMARY:Virtual Walking Tour: The Year of Remembrance of the Heroes of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising Part 1
DESCRIPTION:The first of two live\, virtual tours of the Warsaw Ghetto will focus on the lives of Jews in the city during the Nazi occupation. The Ghetto\, which was established in 1940\, was approximately 1.3 miles in size and was surrounded by a ten-foot-high wall. It was the largest of the Nazi-established ghettos during World War II\, with a peak estimated population of over 450\,000. Walk along the Ghetto wall and learn about conditions in the ghetto\, and how the Jewish community managed to maintain their vibrant culture and intellectual life despite the extreme poverty\, hunger\, and disease in the Ghetto. We will visit some of the places that have survived the War\, as well as contemporary monuments and commemorations.
