SUMMARY:Grain de Sail: A Taste of Modern Sail Freight
DESCRIPTION:Join the Seaport Museum and the schooner Grain de Sail for an engaging two-part tour that will showcase the past and present of transporting cargo under sail. At Pier 17\, come aboard the first modern cargo schooner in the world to see how Grain de Sail offers a sustainable alternative to shipping organic goods internationally. See how the modernizations go beyond an aluminum hull to also include modern navigation technologies\, and create a floating wine cellar that properly preserves bottles in ideal conditions throughout the voyage. As the world’s only commercial exporter of fine chocolates and wines by cargo sailboat\, Grain de Sail takes on the responsibility of filling the limited space in the hull with the most deserving delicacies. At Pier 16\, the tour will continue aboard the 1885 tall ship Wavertree\, to show how cargo was transported between ports in the 19th century. Join us to walk the length of the ship’s hold to grasp the immense scale and imagine the vast quantities of goods once transported under sail. The tour will conclude with a glass of wine and a sampling of chocolates brought by Grain de Sail from France to New York\, offering a taste of the voyage’s delectable cargo. Program repeated at 2pm and 3pm.

SUMMARY:A Revolutionary Friendship: Washington\, Jefferson\, and the American Republic Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Martha Washington’s worst memory was the death of her husband. Her second worst was Thomas Jefferson’s awkward visit to pay his respects subsequently. Indeed\, by the time George Washington had died in 1799\, the two founders were estranged. But that estrangement has obscured the fact that for most of their thirty-year acquaintance they enjoyed a productive relationship. In this lecture\, Francis D. Cogliano considers the significance of one of the most important but understudied personal relationships of the founding era: the connection between George Washington and Thomas Jefferson that spanned three turbulent decades.

SUMMARY:Arthur Szyk and the Art of the Haggadah
DESCRIPTION:This four-part lecture series by Szyk scholar Irvin Ungar will explore how and why Szyk is the artist of and for the Jewish people\, and the ways his art and spirit remain eternal in the service of mankind. Arthur Szyk’s Haggadah was not only the most expensive new book in the world upon publication in 1940\, but the Times of London deemed it “worthy of being considered among the most beautiful of books ever produced by the hand of man.” Its editor\, Cecil Roth declared “To call Arthur Szyk the greatest illuminator since the 16th century is no flattery. It is the simple truth that manifests itself to anyone who studies his work with the care which it deserves.” This study will also demonstrate how Szyk saw Hitler as the new Pharaoh and the Nazis as the new Egyptians who had come to annihilate his people\, using an ancient text to deliver a modern message about persecution and freedom. Executed between 1934-1936\, Szyk’s visual commentary called for heroism and emigration of Europe’s Jews to Palestine.

SUMMARY:Language City
DESCRIPTION:Join the Seaport Museum and Ross Perlin\, linguist and co-director of the non-profit Endangered Language Alliance\, for a unique look at the linguistic diversity of New York City as explored in his new book\, Language City: The Fight to Preserve Endangered Mother Tongues in New York. In this program\, Perlin will share his race against time to map little-known languages across New York and will present a portrait of contemporary New York illustrated through six speakers of little-known and overlooked languages deep in their communities\, from the streets of Brooklyn and Queens to villages on the other side of the world. He explores the languages themselves\, from rare sounds to sentence-long words to bits of grammar that encode entirely different worldviews. On the 100th anniversary of a notorious anti-immigration law that closed America’s doors for decades and the 400th anniversary of New York’s colonial founding\, Perlin raises the alarm about growing political threats and the onslaught of “killer languages” like English and Spanish.
