SUMMARY:The Origin of Chinese Characters and the Nature of Calligraphy
DESCRIPTION:For nearly 2\,000 years\, Chinese people has transformed the act of writing characters into the art of calligraphy\, a unique practice elevating the practicality of writing characters into an exceptional art form with rare similarities among other cultures in the world. Through the interplay of black and white\, dots and lines\, Chinese calligraphy embodies both intellectual creativity and emotional expression. The spiritual essence conveyed through calligraphy is deeply intertwined with the rich traditions of Chinese culture. In this online seminar\, Prof. Shuqiang Cui will guide participants to explore the relationship between Chinese characters and calligraphy\, as well as the distinction between everyday writing and calligraphy as an art form. Participants will also learn how to appreciate the aesthetics of calligraphy and reflect on the meaning and value of studying calligraphy today. This two-hour online seminar will be in Chinese.

SUMMARY:“Our Nazi: An American Suburb’s Encounter with Evil”
DESCRIPTION:Reinhold Kulle seemed like the perfect school employee. But in 1982\, as his retirement neared\, his long-concealed secret came to light. The chief custodian at Oak Park and River Forest High School outside Chicago had been a Nazi\, a member of the SS\, and a guard at a brutal slave labor camp during World War II. Similar revelations stunned communities across the country. As the Office of Special Investigations raced to uncover Hitler’s men in the United States\, neighbors had to reconcile horrific accusations with the helpful\, kind\, and soft-spoken neighbors they thought they knew. Though Nazis loomed in the American consciousness as evil epitomized\, in Oak Park—a Chicago suburb renowned for its liberalism—people rose to defend Kulle\, a war criminal.

SUMMARY:Early Concrete Skyscrapers in Seattle
DESCRIPTION:The Museum’s online series The Modern Concrete Skyscraper continues with a look back into the early 20th century with a talk by structural engineer and historian Tyler Sprague on the unique development of concrete skyscrapers in the Pacific Northwest. In the early 1900s\, as Seattle grew into a significant urban center for the region\, its early high-rises were made of imported structural steel. At the same time\, however\, advances in reinforced-concrete construction that came about through the increased production of a local\, high quality cement in the North Cascades created a low-cost\, high-performance building material that Northwest architects and engineers began to apply to high-rise design.

SUMMARY:Book Club: Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe
DESCRIPTION:A simple story of a “strong man” whose life is dominated by fear and anger\, Things Fall Apart is written with remarkable economy and subtle irony. Uniquely and richly African\, at the same time it reveals Achebe’s keen awareness of the human qualities common to men of all times and places.
