SUMMARY:Stories Survive: “Schindler’s Listed”
DESCRIPTION:Schindler’s Listed tells the story of Mark Biederman’s twenty-year quest to find gold coins which his father’s family buried in their backyard in Poland just prior to being deported by the Nazis to concentration camps. His father survived the war\, but died when Mark was a teenager\, leaving him only with the knowledge that he had buried the coins somewhere in Poland\, and no information about his family. During his research\, Biederman uncovered many interesting and disturbing facts about his parents and their families\, such as the fact that his father was the third person on Oskar Schindler’s list and had a chance meeting with Adolf Hitler\, and that his mother was selected as a cook for the infamous Dr. Josef Mengele.

SUMMARY:Land of My Soul: The Theater of Sholem Asch
DESCRIPTION:Right from the beginning of his career\, Sholem Asch\, a yeshiva school dropout from a small Polish village\, placed himself at the center of global theatrical culture. His 24 dramas were presented on major stages in multiple languages throughout the world making him one of the most produced Jewish playwrights in history. In Land of My Soul leading Asch interpreter Caraid O’Brien performs excerpts from some of Asch’s most successful and controversial dramas including God of Vengeance\, Motke Thief\, The Dead Man\, Rabbi Doctor Silver\, On the Road to Zion\, Our Faith and Amnon and Tamar. This one-person performance weaves together never before seen in English monologues from Asch’s plays (translated by O’Brien) alongside their stunning theatrical histories. The performance will be followed by a talkback with Sholem Asch’s great grandson\, David Mazower\, chief curator of Yiddish: A Global Culture\, the Yiddish Book Center’s new core exhibition\, and Lisa Newman\, Director of Publishing and Public Programs\, Yiddish Book Center.

SUMMARY:Deepfakes and Democracy in the Age of AI
DESCRIPTION:A recent Associated Press poll reveals that 58% of US adults across both political parties believe that AI will amplify the spread of misinformation in the 2024 presidential election. Despite this widespread distrust\, some political candidates have already leveraged deepfake ads in elections\, utilizing AI-generated images and text-to-voice converters to craft highly realistic visuals that blur the line between truth and deception. Beyond influencing public opinion with such deepfakes\, AI can also skew election outcomes by deploying chatbots on a massive scale to target millions of voters with tailored political messages. While AI-enabled technologies present significant risks to elections’ integrity and societal cohesion\, they also potentially enhance our democratic institutions. This technology can boost civic engagement and strengthen the electoral system by increasing accessibility and mitigating existing biases.
