SUMMARY:Huzzah! Drinking with John Hancock during the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:When John Hancock needed to win people over\, he didn’t talk about resisting taxes or policy improvements; instead\, he served alcohol. He offered rum punch and wine at his home and paid for lavish meals in taverns to bring people together. Guests included lower class men\, French officers\, and Black women and men. By throwing parties\, Hancock gained social and political power among myriad groups\, which repeatedly paid dividends. He was consistently elected to political office and when he smuggled madeira into Boston\, one of the most memorable and violent mobs during colonial resistance defended him. In this forty-five-minute talk\, Brooke Barbier will discuss an oft-ignored aspect of colonial life: the high rate of alcohol consumption. Join us for lively and evocative stories and images that illuminate the critical and complex role that alcohol played in the social\, political\, and cultural fabric of the American Revolution and how John Hancock used it to his advantage.

SUMMARY:Annual Great Crashes Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Relive the Great Crash of 1929 on the Museum’s annual crash-themed walking tour of Lower Manhattan. This unique walking tour\, now in its 35th year\, is the only regularly-scheduled event that commemorates the Great Crash of 1929\, the Panic of 1907 and the 1987 stock market collapse. It also delves into the political\, financial\, real estate and architectural history of Wall Street and New York City. The tour shows that despite such adversities as the Great Fires of 1776 and 1835\, financial panics of the 19th century\, the 1920 Wall Street explosion\, the Crash of 1929\, the stock market collapse of 1987\, the September 11\, 2001 terrorist attack and the financial crisis of 2008\, New York and Wall Street have always recovered their position as the world’s financial capital. Rain date is November 4\, 2023.

SUMMARY:Tove Bamberger’s Danish Rescue
DESCRIPTION:Tove Bamberger (née Schonbaum) was born in Copenhagen in 1934 and raised as a secular Jew. When the Germans invaded Denmark in April 1940\, life in the country continued largely unchanged until September 1943\, when Hitler issued a deportation order for all Danish Jews. Tove’s family\, along with 95% of Danish Jews\, fled to Sweden on a fishing boat. Tove attended a Danish school set up for the refugees in Sweden\, and when the war ended her family returned to their home in Copenhagen. There\, she married Niels Bamberger\, who had experienced the same rescue and return. In 1955\, after Tove’s high school graduation\, Tove and Niels immigrated\, settling in Washington Heights\, New York\, where they raised two daughters. Tove will discuss her story of escape and return\, her life in Sweden\, and what her life was like after World War II in this Danish Rescue Stories Survive program.

SUMMARY:First to Stand: Upstanders Fighting for Justice
DESCRIPTION:The new film First to Stand follows Irwin Cotler\, former Canadian Minister of Justice and the current Canadian Ambassador to Combat Antisemitism\, along with his team of activists at the Raoul Wallenberg Centre as they take on the cases and causes of political prisoners and human rights activists against the world’s most repressive regimes. Cotler began fighting for freedom and justice in law school with the landmark case of Russian refusnik Natan Sharansky\, and continues to fight for human rights causes today. The film will be followed by a talk with Cotler and Bill Browder\, British-American financier who created and championed the Magnitsky Sanctions\, the most effective tool to hold individual human rights abusers accountable. They will be in conversation with Rick Salomon\, a co-founder of the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center.
