SUMMARY:Intersections: 50 Years of Hip Hop & the WTC
DESCRIPTION:Intersections examines the often-surprising connections between 9/11 and today’s world. From global industries to individual lives\, the attacks sparked a fundamental shift for many\, altering trajectories in ways both expected and unforeseen. Our public programs explore these diverse shifts and lend visibility to the continuing legacy of 9/11. Amid one of New York City’s most tumultuous decades\, 1973 saw both the dedication of the World Trade Center and the birth of Hip Hop. As we look at 9/11’s impact across culture\, we mark this twin milestone 50 years later with Dr. MC Debbie D\, Hip Hop historian and pioneer MC; Chuck Creekmur\, CEO of AllHipHop.com; and Rocky Bucano\, Executive Director of the Universal Hip Hop Museum.Together in conversation with Museum Director Clifford Chanin\, they reflect on the history of Hip Hop\, the evolution of the genre in a post-9/11 world\, and how New York City and its ever-changing skyline influenced the artistic movement that now spans the globe.

SUMMARY:Gibney Presents: Falcon Dance
DESCRIPTION:Beauty Happens explores intimacy\, human resilience\, adaptation\, and physical empowerment. The work interrogates themes of instinct\, chaos\, control and the repercussions of touch. Influenced by the mating dances\, flocking patterns\, nesting\, and homing mechanisms of birds\, the work journeys through the construction and simultaneous unraveling of survival systems. The work centers femmeness and queerness and asks physical questions about both individual and group agency and autonomy in performance.

SUMMARY:An “Eventful and Somewhat Romantic” Life: Yan Phou Lee in America
DESCRIPTION:Yan Phou Lee (李恩富) was the first Chinese American to publish a book in the United States\, When I was a Boy in China (1887). He first came to the U.S. at the age of 12\, as a member of the Chinese Educational Mission (CEM)\, which ran from 1873 to 1881. Lee returned to the U.S. in 1884 to complete his studies at Yale College (now Yale University) and to deliberately cultivate himself as a voice for the Chinese\, a writer who sought to correct misunderstandings of China and the Chinese people and to bridge the gap between American and Chinese culture. He remained in the U.S. until 1927\, serving as a writer and editor for various newspapers and in a dizzying array of other occupations. Professor Duvall will provide an overview of Lee’s life in the US\, with a focus on his life as a writer\, his book\, and his responses to the hateful and violent Sinophobia rampant in the U.S. at the end of the 19th century. Lee’s fascinating story has much to teach us in 21st century America.
