SUMMARY:“Our Nazi: An American Suburb’s Encounter with Evil”
DESCRIPTION:Reinhold Kulle seemed like the perfect school employee. But in 1982\, as his retirement neared\, his long-concealed secret came to light. The chief custodian at Oak Park and River Forest High School outside Chicago had been a Nazi\, a member of the SS\, and a guard at a brutal slave labor camp during World War II. Similar revelations stunned communities across the country. As the Office of Special Investigations raced to uncover Hitler’s men in the United States\, neighbors had to reconcile horrific accusations with the helpful\, kind\, and soft-spoken neighbors they thought they knew. Though Nazis loomed in the American consciousness as evil epitomized\, in Oak Park—a Chicago suburb renowned for its liberalism—people rose to defend Kulle\, a war criminal.

SUMMARY:Early Concrete Skyscrapers in Seattle
DESCRIPTION:The Museum’s online series The Modern Concrete Skyscraper continues with a look back into the early 20th century with a talk by structural engineer and historian Tyler Sprague on the unique development of concrete skyscrapers in the Pacific Northwest. In the early 1900s\, as Seattle grew into a significant urban center for the region\, its early high-rises were made of imported structural steel. At the same time\, however\, advances in reinforced-concrete construction that came about through the increased production of a local\, high quality cement in the North Cascades created a low-cost\, high-performance building material that Northwest architects and engineers began to apply to high-rise design.

SUMMARY:Elias Canetti's The Book Against Death
DESCRIPTION:The Nobel Prize winner Elias Canetti all his life declared himself a “mortal enemy” of death—and here\, in English at last\, is his landmark book on the subject. The Book Against Death is the work of a lifetime: a collection of Elias Canetti’s powerful\, disarming\, and often bleakly comic observations\, diatribes\, musings\, and commentaries on and against death. Evoking despair\, melancholy\, and fury\, Canetti examines the inevitable demise of all beings—from the ant\, the fish\, and the worm to an executioner\, a court painter\, and a Greek god—while fiercely protesting the mass deaths incurred during war and the willingness of the despot to wield death as power. Interspersed with material from philosophers and writers such as Goethe\, Walter Benjamin\, and Robert Walser\, The Book Against Death is ultimately a moving affirmation of the value of life itself. Canetti famously refused to die before he’d read all his obituaries and corrected them.

SUMMARY:“At the Turn of Spring”: Diaspora and the Future in Chinese-Language Writing
DESCRIPTION:In an era of deepening globalization and multicultural integration\, Chinese-language literature serves not only as a rich carrier of Chinese cultural heritage but also as a vital bridge connecting diverse cultures and ideas. SUMMARY:Brave\, Unbodied Scheme
DESCRIPTION:An evening featuring a range of brilliant minds from NYC’s poetry scene. The title for this new monthly series comes from Herman Melville’s poem “Art”. Poetry\, wine\, and the sea have always been inextricably intertwined. This reading series seeks to highlight poets from all over the city\, and give them a backdrop of McNally Jackson’s bar to read their new work. Join us to hear poems\, drink wine\, and enjoy the “pulsed life”. This month’s reading features Ariel Yelen\, Brenda Shaughnessy\, Emily Lee Luan\, and Paolo Javier
