DESCRIPTION:Following the September 11 attacks in New York City\, people were unable to leave Lower Manhattan due to the closure of bridges and tunnels throughout the city. Within minutes of the first plane hitting the first tower\, multiple fireboats from the New York City Fire Department rushed the scene\, and the US Coast Guard coordinated a convoy of hundreds of merchant ships\, tugboats\, ferries and other vessels to evacuate stranded and injured victims. This extraordinary rescue was memorialized in the 2011 short documentary film Boatlift documenting the mass evacuation of more than 500\,000 civilians in just nine hours—the largest maritime evacuation conducted in the history of the United States\, moving more people from the island than even the 1940 evacuation of Allied troops from France. At this virtual event\, see the short documentary film Boatlift: An Untold Tale of 9/11 Resilience narrated by Tom Hanks\, followed by a panel discussion on the largest water evacuation in maritime history. Panelists are National Maritime Historical Society trustee emeritus RADM Richard Larrabee\, USCG (Ret.)\, USCG Safety and Security Division Chief for Sector New York John Hillin\, president of the New Jersey Sandy Hook Pilots Association Capt. SUMMARY:Stories Survive: Dr. Rene David Alkalay
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Rene David Alkalay was born in March 1941 in Zagreb\, the capital of the former Yugoslavia (now Croatia). When Dr. Alkalay was just a few weeks old\, Croatia became a puppet state of Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy\, and his father and paternal relatives were imprisoned in a concentration camp run by the country’s new Ustaša regime. Later that year\, Dr. Alkalay\, his mother\, and his maternal relatives were imprisoned in other Ustaša-run concentration camps\, where they remained for two years. After the camp was liberated\, Dr. Alkalay hid in the forest with partisan groups for a year and then was airlifted out of Yugoslavia to a Displaced Persons camp in Italy. He spent four years after the war at a Catholic school in Rome\, unaware of his true religious identity. In 1950\, Dr. Alkalay and his family emigrated to the United States\, where he later became a psychotherapist\, nutritionist\, and pastoral counselor. Join the Museum for a program exploring Dr. Alkalay’s story of survival in Croatia.

DESCRIPTION:RENEWAL\, a solo exhibition by New York painter Todd Stone (b. 1951)\, opens for public exhibition at the NYC Culture Club in the World Trade Center’s Oculus from September 1 through September 30\, 2021. The exhibit features over 30 works in oil\, watercolor\, and digital media that document the 20-year story of the rebuilding of downtown\, and the 12 years of Stone’s tenure as an artist in residence at the World Trade Center. The opening\, aligned with the 20th anniversary of September 11\, offers the public a moment to remember those who we lost\, while highlighting the transformation\, renewal\, and rebuilding of the World Trade Center site. \nStone’s body of work stands apart in reflecting the transformation of the Ground Zero site: produced in the span from 2001 to 2021. The show presents a journey from devastation to recovery to renewal. It is a visual diary that opens with paintings that document that tragic day\, the work tracks the two decades journey and ongoing reconstruction of the World Trade Center and the building of the 9/11 Memorial\, the Oculus\, and the WTC office towers. In watercolor and oil\, Stone paints a resilient city working through trauma and rebuilding to emerge as a renewed modern metropolis. Stone\, who has worked for 12 years from various studio spaces throughout the new World Trade Center\, presents sweeping cityscapes with 360 degree panoramic views of Manhattan\, Brooklyn\, New Jersey\, and New York harbor in addition to portraits of streetscape construction and renewal-in-action. \nThe public exhibit at the NYC Culture Club offers visitors the unique opportunity to pay tribute to – and reflect on – the rebuilding of downtown at the site itself. Visitors can both honor the past and clearly see New York’s present\, and perhaps glimpse into its future. In the spirit of renewal and looking forward\, this show also debuts Todd’s foray into digital media. Digital animations of Stone’s work will be displayed on LED screens in the Oculus throughout September\, as well as in video prints that have been developed in collaboration with creative agency Bodega Bunnies.

SUMMARY:Take a Time Machine in BPC: From Landfill to Waterfront Community
DESCRIPTION:If the Skyscraper Museum gallery was a time machine and we traveled back 50 years\, we’d be standing on sand! The neighborhood that is now Battery Park City was created as new land in the Hudson River\, beginning with some excavations from the foundations for the original World Trade Center. In this program\, we’ll time travel back forty years to see how artists turned landfill in Battery Park City into art projects\, then imagine and draw our own projects for outdoor land art or public sculptures using photography. All ages welcome.

DESCRIPTION:Art leaders Kamau Ware and Risë Wilson will discuss public art as an avenue for discovering and revealing untold histories. Multidimensional artist and historian Kamau Ware is Founder of Black Gotham Experience (BGX)\, an immersive multimedia project that reimagines the spaces directly impacted by the African Diaspora as human stories\, Ware has become a voice to fill the visual abyss of Black New York history with research and illuminating creativity. Risë Wilson founded The Laundromat Project in 1999\, an award-winning organization that connects artists and communities of color to their capacity to envision the world in which we all want to live\, and the skills sets to make it so. Her twenty-year tenure in arts and culture has spanned philanthropic practice\, strategic planning\, artist development\, and public engagement. Risë’s work in all its forms is preoccupied with dislodging herself from the bear-traps of oppression to help her kinfolk do the same.
