SUMMARY:Kathy Westwater
DESCRIPTION:Gibney\, the New York City based dance and social justice organization\, presents the world premiere of choreographer Kathy Westwater’s Moundscapes December 8–10\, 2022\, commissioned by Eva Yaa Asantewaa as part of the 2022-2023 season at Gibney Center. The work is a new iteration of the artist’s durational performance research project PARK\, a nearly fifteen-year inquiry into the site of Fresh Kills Landfill that contends with themes of environmental trauma\, grief\, and complicity. Once the largest landfill in the world\, Fresh Kills is being transformed into a public park set to open in 2023\, a transition Westwater has witnessed through her dance\, somatic\, and material practices.

SUMMARY:Generation Disaster
DESCRIPTION:A particular slice of the population\, which includes roughly the younger half of Millennials and the older half of Gen Z\, are distinguished by the fact that while they live in the shadow of 9/11\, it is an event for which they may not have a memory or complete understanding. Disaster mental health expert Karla Vermeulen refers to this group – those who were born between 1989 and 2001 – as Generation Disaster in her latest book of the same name. She is joined by Florence Buchanan\, director of the documentary films Right There and Right There Part 2\, which follow a group of 12 students from PS 234\, an elementary school located three blocks north of the World Trade Center\, as they reflect on their experiences at the milestone junctures of 10 and 20 years after the 9/11 attacks. One of the students\, now a special education teacher\, Jenice Lyla Walford\, shares her personal reflections as a member of this generation. Together\, in conversation with Noah Rauch\, the Museum’s Senior Vice President\, they discuss the trauma caused by numerous events that have followed since the attacks and how these events have continued to shape all of us – as kids\, as adults\, as parents\, and as a community.

SUMMARY:Gary Lucas’s Live Score of “The Golem” and Post-Film Discussion with Lucas and Annette Insdorf
DESCRIPTION:The legend of the Golem — a person made from clay and brought to life through kabbalistic magic in 16th century Prague to protect the Jewish community from pogroms — is one of the most enduring stories in Jewish mythology. The 1920 silent film The Golem: How He Came into the World\, directed by Paul Wegener and Carl Boese\, is considered the definitive version of this amazing tale. Legendary guitarist Gary Lucas‘s original solo guitar score of The Golem has been considered a classic since it debuted in 1989 with co-composer and keyboardist Water Horn at the BAM Next Wave Festival. Watch the film\, with Lucas’s live guitar score. Then Annette Insdorf\, one of the foremost film historians in the U.S.\, will join Lucas for a discussion

SUMMARY:The Slow Trek Through China\, with Pulitzer-winning Journalist Paul Salopek
DESCRIPTION:Join China Institute online to have a conversation with Paul Salopek\, who is now walking through China as part of his ambitious 24\,000-mile Out of Eden Walk journey. Started in 2013 in Ethiopia\, “Out of Eden Walk” is a unique “slow journalism” project to walk the pathways of the first humans who migrated out of Africa in the Stone Age. After nine years and nineteen countries\, Paul has traversed 12\,000 miles and has 12\,000 miles to go until the end of the Out of Eden Walk’s global route. Paul Salopek is a Pulitzer Prize winning writer and National Geographic Explorer who founded the Out of Eden Walk\, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with robust global education and storytelling missions\, in 2013. In an era where speed is key\, especially in journalism where everyone needs to be the first to break the news\, Mr. Salopek is now moving at the beat of his footsteps in China\, covering the major stories of our time—from climate change to technological innovation\, from mass migration to cultural survival—by giving voice to the people who inhabit them every day but rarely make the news. He will be joining us from his walk in China to bring us the first-hand stories of this unusual experience.

SUMMARY:Ancient Sound Made New: Experience the Brilliance of China’s Chime-Bells
DESCRIPTION:Unique music experience with the New Dasheng Chime-Bells (大晟新钟)\, ceremonial carillon reconstructed based on historical models of Dasheng Bells (the Great Brilliance) of the 12th Century\, connecting the sound of China’s dynastic rituals to the music world today. This set of 20 new Dasheng Chime-bells\, beautifully designed by Dr. Youping Li (李幼平) from Wuhan Conservatory of Music\, are identical to their historical models except for pitches adjusted to match current and universal standards. New music for these bells with symphony orchestra\, including Grand Prize winning compositions\, will be performed at Carnegie Hall on December 29\, when Valparaiso University will formally present the bells as a gift to China Institute\, their new home in New York. With the presence of these magnificent chime-bells\, audience will learn from three distinguished speakers\, Joseph Lam\, Youping Li\, and Dennis Friesen-Carper\, the extraordinary story of the new Dasheng Chime-bells\, their journey not only a tale of cultural exchange through music\, but representing U.S.-China relation in our time today. Audience will also have the opportunity to hear and interact with the bells during and after the program. A brief reception will follow the discussion.

SUMMARY:Virtual Walking Tour: Jewish Copenhagen
DESCRIPTION:Jews arrived in Denmark in the 17th century by invitation of the Danish King. In this live\, virtual walking tour\, explore the streets of Copenhagen with a member of the Jewish community there\, who will discuss the early years of Jews in Copenhagen and the essential Jewish sites throughout the city. We’ll discuss World War II as we learn about the rescue of Danish Jews by brave fishermen who helped save more than 95% of the Danish Jewish population\, some 7\,000 people\, smuggling them by boat to safety in Sweden in 1943. As a special treat\, we will experience the lighting of the first candle on this first night of Hanukkah! The Museum is proud to count the Gerda III in our Collection\, one of the boats that participated in the Danish Rescue.
