SUMMARY:Ancient Sound Made New: Experience the Brilliance of China’s Chime-Bells
DESCRIPTION:Unique music experience with the New Dasheng Chime-Bells (大晟新钟)\, ceremonial carillon reconstructed based on historical models of Dasheng Bells (the Great Brilliance) of the 12th Century\, connecting the sound of China’s dynastic rituals to the music world today. This set of 20 new Dasheng Chime-bells\, beautifully designed by Dr. Youping Li (李幼平) from Wuhan Conservatory of Music\, are identical to their historical models except for pitches adjusted to match current and universal standards. New music for these bells with symphony orchestra\, including Grand Prize winning compositions\, will be performed at Carnegie Hall on December 29\, when Valparaiso University will formally present the bells as a gift to China Institute\, their new home in New York. With the presence of these magnificent chime-bells\, audience will learn from three distinguished speakers\, Joseph Lam\, Youping Li\, and Dennis Friesen-Carper\, the extraordinary story of the new Dasheng Chime-bells\, their journey not only a tale of cultural exchange through music\, but representing U.S.-China relation in our time today. Audience will also have the opportunity to hear and interact with the bells during and after the program. A brief reception will follow the discussion.

SUMMARY:Virtual Walking Tour: Jewish Copenhagen
DESCRIPTION:Jews arrived in Denmark in the 17th century by invitation of the Danish King. In this live\, virtual walking tour\, explore the streets of Copenhagen with a member of the Jewish community there\, who will discuss the early years of Jews in Copenhagen and the essential Jewish sites throughout the city. We’ll discuss World War II as we learn about the rescue of Danish Jews by brave fishermen who helped save more than 95% of the Danish Jewish population\, some 7\,000 people\, smuggling them by boat to safety in Sweden in 1943. As a special treat\, we will experience the lighting of the first candle on this first night of Hanukkah! The Museum is proud to count the Gerda III in our Collection\, one of the boats that participated in the Danish Rescue.

SUMMARY:Cry\, My Heart\, Cry!
DESCRIPTION:The Museum welcomes the Zisl Slepovitch Ensemble and Sasha Lurje to present a selection of songs that Dr. D. Zisl Slepovitch has discovered\, curated\, transcribed\, and arranged working as a Musician-in-Residence at the Fortunoff Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies at Yale University\, a unique collection of 4\,400 interviews conducted in the 1980s–2000s. The songs in the program provide a series of insights into the Holocaust survivors’ experiences both during World War II and in the pre- and inter-war years as they were growing up in Eastern\, Southern\, and Central Europe. The compositions form a timeline that recreates a dynamic\, multidimensional image of people’s lives and the multiple identities they carried — as Jews by faith and roots\, and as citizens of different European countries. At the core of the program are the unique songs and poetry (some never publicly performed before) that ghetto and camp prisoners composed and performed during the Holocaust.

SUMMARY:The Fulton Fish Market: A History
DESCRIPTION:Today\, the once bustling\, fragrant fish market in lower Manhattan’s South Street Seaport is a rebuilt retail destination with a new kind of marketing – but from its founding in 1822\, through its move to the Bronx in 2005\, the Fulton Fish Market was an iconic New York institution. At first a neighborhood market for many different kinds of food\, by the late nineteenth century\, it became the nation’s largest fish and seafood wholesaling center. Thousands of immigrants worked at the Fulton Fish Market and introduced the rest of the city to their seafood traditions. In popular culture\, the market evoked images of the animated East River waterfront\, late-night fishmongering\, organized crime\, and a vanished working-class New York. In his new book The Fulton Fish Market: A History (Columbia University Press\, 2022)\, historian Jonathan H. Rees examines the market’s workings and significance\, tracing the transportation\, retailing\, and consumption of fish. Rees tells the stories of the people and institutions – including fishermen\, retail stores\, restaurants\, and chefs – bringing together technological\, culinary\, and environmental history to explain how changes in the urban landscape and economy affected the history of the market and the surrounding neighborhood.

SUMMARY:The History of Antisemitism – Kill the Hollywood Jews: The Prewar Origins of Film Noir with Steven J. Ross
DESCRIPTION:When Nazi plans were learned and promptly ignored by local and federal authorities in Los Angeles\, a number of Jews working in Hollywood secretly funded a spy ring that operated from August 1933 until the end of WWII. These spies uncovered a series of plots aimed at attracting international attention to the Nazi cause and sparking a wave of deadly pogroms throughout the U.S. The most nefarious plot involved blowing up the homes of twenty-four of Hollywood’s most famous figures\, twenty-two of whom were Jewish. Many aspects of film noir\, the genre borne out of 1930s and ’40s Lost Angeles\, reflect these experiences\, along with witnessing corrupt officials and crime unpunished\, and the experiences of a post-war sense of dread. Learn these incredible stories with historian Steven J. Ross.
