Chao\, a fellow traveler\, played a pivotal role in the formation of Hu Shi’s ideas on literary reform\, forming a lifelong friendship. On August 17\, 1923\, graduates including Xu Dishan\, Xie Wanying (Bing Xin)\, Tao Ling\, Li Simian from Yenching University\, and Li Shutian\, Chen Lifu from Beiyang University\, along with graduates like Gu Yiqiao\, Wu Wenzao\, Wu Zhuo\, Wu Jingchao\, Liang Shiqiu\, Sun Liren\, Zhang Zhongfu from Tsinghua University\, sailed to the United States on the steamship Jackson for further studies.
