SUMMARY:Translating China: Stories of the Pathbreakers
DESCRIPTION:China boasts of a 5000-year civilization\, but for much of the past few millenniums\, the country had been shrouded in mystery due in large part to its lack of communication with the rest of the world. The scarcity of translations of Chinese books\, classic or otherwise\, was a contributing factor to the impasse as well. Mysteries and misunderstandings about China and its culture with its values\, customs and institutions began to be unveiled and corrected in modern times thanks to the masterful translation of Chinese novels and other classics by a group of Westerners who were steeped in the Chinese language and culture. In a recent book on noteworthy Western translators of Chinese literature\, the author Prof. Zhu Zhenwu of Shanghai Normal University\, a renowned translator himself\, provided insights into 20 or so master translators in modern times from the U.S.\, the UK\, Australia and Canada who translated over 300 Chinese literary works\, both classic and modern and brought a side of China rarely known to the English-speaking World.

DESCRIPTION:Elly Gotz was born in 1928 in Kovno (Kaunas)\, Lithuania. When he was 13 years old\, Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union and Elly and his family were forced into a ghetto. When the ghetto was later liquidated\, Elly was transported to the Dachau concentration camp\, where he labored in an underground factory for a German company named Moll. After being liberated in 1945\, Elly and his family lived in Germany\, desperate to emigrate. In the spring of 1947\, they were accepted to Norway as refugees\, and later that year they were able to immigrate to Zimbabwe to join extended family members. Elly eventually moved to Johannesburg and then Toronto\, where he established several businesses and achieved his lifelong dream of becoming a pilot. In 2017\, at the age of 89\, he fulfilled another dream by going skydiving. Join the Museum for a Stories Survive program with Elly Gotz exploring his remarkable journey of survival and rebuilding.

DESCRIPTION:Graphic novels have long been emerging as a way to tell difficult and often traumatic stories. Since the late 1970s\, they have also been a medium for telling stories about the Holocaust. From true stories to fictional ones\, graphic novels are used to tell all kinds of stories about this time. Recently\, authors and illustrators have been turning to stories about teenagers during the Holocaust. Join the Museum for a program exploring the depiction of teenagers in Holocaust graphic novels. The program will consist of a conversation between David Polonsky\, illustrator of Anne Frank’s Diary: The Graphic Adaptation; Ken Krimstein\, author of When I Grow Up: The Lost Autobiographies of Six Yiddish Teens\, and R.J. Palacio\, author of White Bird: A Wonder Story.  The conversation will be moderated by AJ Frost\, Newsletter Editor and Staff Writer for the Comics Beat.
