Join tugboat captain Ann Loeding and Harbor School graduate/SUNY Maritime student Ashley Cruz\, along with chantey singer Bonnie Milner of the Johnson Girls\, to discuss the roles of women in modern maritime careers and the role of women in singing sea songs; ultimately\, all that matters is how good you are at your job. We will also discuss the function of music and traditional culture on board\, yesterday and today. A brief Q&A will follow the conversation.

SUMMARY:Person Place Thing with Randy Cohen: Featuring Guest Sculptor Vinnie Bagwell
DESCRIPTION:Person Place Thing is an interview show based on this idea: people are particularly engaging when they speak not directly about themselves but about something they care about. Guests talk about one person\, one place\, and one thing that are important to them. The result? Surprising stories from great speakers. Host Randy Cohen will be interviewing sculptor Vinnie Bagwell. Vinnie Bagwell began sculpting in 1993. Currently\, Bagwell is leading the conception and development of “The Enslaved Africans’ Rain Garden”–an urban-heritage public-art project for the City of Yonkers\, New York\, to commemorate the legacy of the first enslaved Africans to be manumitted by law in the United States\, 64 years before the Emancipation Proclamation.

SUMMARY:“The Ravine” Book Talk With Wendy Lower And Paul Salmons
DESCRIPTION:In 2009\, Dr. Wendy Lower\, the acclaimed author of Hitler’s Furies and chair of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s Academic Council\, was shown a photograph just brought to the Museum. The image—a rare “action shot” documenting the horrific final moment of a family’s murder—drove her to conduct years of forensic and archival detective work in Ukraine\, Germany\, Slovakia\, Israel\, and the United States\, recovering new layers of detail about the Nazis’ open-air massacres in eastern Europe and the role of the family unit in Nazi ideology. In her new book The Ravine: A Family\, a Photograph\, a Holocaust Massacre Revealed\, Lower explores the exceptional image and the new understandings it has unlocked about the Holocaust. Join Lower for a discussion about the book and her research with Paul Salmons\, a Holocaust education specialist\, curator of Auschwitz. Not long ago. Not far away\, chief curator of Seeing Auschwitz\, and consultant to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

SUMMARY:COVID-19: Flattening the Curve
DESCRIPTION:Webinar. From lockdown in China and Italy\, to California’s shelter in place\, to New York State on PAUSE – which measures are effectively flattening the exponential curve of COVID-19 spread\, and why? How can we take lessons learned from COVID-19 responses internationally and apply them to newly emerging hotspots? Moreover\, as new cases in China dwindle\, the lockdown in Wuhan has been lifted\, and Italy and Spain are also taking cautious steps to ease restrictions. People are slowly returning to work\, but the impact on the spread of coronavirus remains unknown. How likely is a resurgence and further need for isolation measures? This discussion will compare global approaches taken to combat COVID-19 and discuss strategies for lifting restrictions as infections decline.

SUMMARY:The Primacy of Petronas Towers: Supertalls Go Global
DESCRIPTION:Skyscraper Museum webinar. In 1998 the twin Petronas Towers in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur took the title of “world’s tallest building” away from the United States for the first time. The towers’ developers\, private investors working with the Malaysian government and Petronas\, the national oil company\, sought to create a headquarters and a landmark that would establish KL’s prominence as a commercial and cultural capital. In the design of American architects Cesar Pelli and Fred Clarke\, they found a winning scheme\, paired towers of slender proportions and scalloped spires that suggest both Islamic geometries and temple forms. Like the towers that would proliferate in Asia and the Middle East in the next decade\, Petronas was constructed of high-strength concrete\, supported by massive core and an outer ring of widely-spaced super columns. In both structural engineering and iconic imagery\, Petronas pointed the way to the supertalls of the 21st-century.

SUMMARY:New Beginnings: Jewish Refugees After The Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:At the conclusion of World War II\, there were millions of refugees in Europe\, including many Holocaust survivors who refused to go home or had no homes to return to. These survivors experienced struggles and successes as they sought to rebuild their lives in the shadow of the Holocaust\, often in Displaced Persons (DP) camps. Tens of thousands emigrated to the United States between 1947 and 1953 and many more found their way to Israel. Join the Museum for a program exploring the stories of these survivors and the lives they lived in the years immediately after the war. The program will feature David Nasaw\, historian and author of The Last Million: Europe’s Displaced Persons from World War to Cold War; Esther Safran Foer\, author of I Want You To Know We’re Still Here: A Post-Holocaust Memoir\, which includes the story of her family’s years in a DP Camp in Germany; and Joseph Berger\, longtime New York Times reporter and editor who authored an account of his own family’s experiences titled Displaced Persons: Growing Up American After the Holocaust.

SUMMARY:Fourteenth Colony: The Forgotten Story of the Gulf South During America's Revolutionary Era
DESCRIPTION:In this lecture\, historian Mike Bunn offers the first comprehensive history of the British colony of West Florida. For a host of reasons\, including the fact that West Florida did not rebel against the British government\, the colony has long been dismissed as a loyal but inconsequential fringe outpost\, if considered at all. But the colony’s history showcases a tumultuous political scene featuring a halting attempt at instituting representative government; a host of bold and colorful characters; a compelling saga of struggle and perseverance in the pursuit of financial stability; and a dramatic series of battles on land and water which brought about the end of its days under the Union Jack.
