SUMMARY:To Dachau And Back To Life
DESCRIPTION:Elly Gotz was born in 1928 in Kovno (Kaunas)\, Lithuania. When he was 13 years old\, Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union and Elly and his family were forced into a ghetto. When the ghetto was later liquidated\, Elly was transported to the Dachau concentration camp\, where he labored in an underground factory for a German company named Moll. In the spring of 1947\, they were accepted to Norway as refugees\, and later that year they were able to immigrate to Zimbabwe to join extended family members. Elly eventually moved to Johannesburg and then Toronto\, where he established several businesses and achieved his lifelong dream of becoming a pilot. In 2017\, at the age of 89\, he fulfilled another dream by going skydiving. Join the Museum for a Stories Survive program with Elly Gotz exploring his remarkable journey of survival and rebuilding.

SUMMARY:Why Modern Portfolio Theory Fails Investors
DESCRIPTION:We are in a time of enormous risk. Economic growth is anemic\, and political risk to the capital markets is on the rise. In the United States\, a generation of white-collar baby boomers is heading into retirement with insufficient assets in their 401(k) programs\, and industrial workers are stuck with materially underfunded pension plans. Against that backdrop\, the investing industry’s current set of practices and assumptions―modern portfolio theory (MPT)―is based on a half-century-old formula that is supposed to deliver the maximum amount of return for a given amount of risk. The trouble is that it doesn’t work very well. In Getting Back to Business: Why Modern Portfolio Theory Fails Investors and How You Can Bring Common Sense to Your Portfolio\, dividend-investing guru Daniel Peris proposes a radical new approach―radical in that it does away with MPT in favor of a more intuitive\, common-sense approach practiced by business people in their own affairs every day: cash returns on cash investments. Peris will also discuss being a historian in a profession with a notably low historical sensibility.

Join the Museum for a conversation with Foxman about his personal background\, his life’s work\, and his outlook on antisemitism today\, moderated by Newsweek Deputy Opinion Editor Batya Ungar-Sargon. He went on to become a pioneering National Director of ADL from 1987 to 2015\, elevating the organization’s national profile and forging connections far beyond the Jewish community. Foxman’s relationships with presidents\, popes\, and prime ministers brought antisemitism into the public eye. DESCRIPTION:A unique architectural art\, the Chinese garden in its varied forms reveals a landscaped symphony of rocks\, plants\, pavilions\, water and bridges orchestrated to vibrate with mystic symbolism. Visitors to Chinese gardens\, both at home and abroad\, seldom fail to marvel at the amazing artistry of the garden craftsmanship and the microcosm of the natural world. The Xu Zhimo Garden at Cambridge University is one of these gems. Completed in 2018\, the garden was dedicated to Xu Zhimo\, a preeminent Chinese poet of the 20th century and an alumnus of Cambridge. One of the architects for the garden is Ms. Yue Zhengyang\, who published in 2021 a Chinese-English book entitled The Xu Zhimo Garden in King’s College\, Cambridge. The publication coincides with the centennial of Xu Zhimo’s enrollment at King’s College in 1921. Illustrated with scores of drawings and photos\, Yue’s book details the design and construction of the first Chinese garden at Cambridge University\, known for its historical British landscape. At the invitation of the Renwen Society\, Ms. Yue Zhengyang will share her experience as a member of the design team for the Xu Zhimo Garden at a lecture on February 12. Specifically\, she will discuss the design concept\, the construction process and the commemorative significance of the garden. Ms. Yue will also compare the Xu Zhimo Garden with the Astor Court in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York\, the Lansu Chinese Garden in Portland\, Liu Fang Yuan in Los Angeles and Qian Yuan at Ruhr University in Bochum\, Germany. She will examine how these classical Chinese gardens are integrated into the local architecture and natural environment\, serving as a bridge for international cultural exchanges.

SUMMARY:Virtual Walking Tour: Jewish Seville
DESCRIPTION:Join the Museum and Our Travel Circle for a virtual walking tour of Jewish history in the Santa Cruz Quarter of Seville\, Spain. Santa Cruz was home to a thriving Jewish community between the 13th century\, when King Ferdinand III of Castille granted the neighborhood to Seville’s Jews\, and the 15th century\, when they were expelled as part of the Spanish Inquisition. The community of 5\,000 Jews made up 5% of the city’s total population. Our tour guide\, Jose Luis\, will show us a remnant of the wall that surrounded the Jewish quarter\, and two of the city’s four synagogues\, which have been converted into churches: San Bartolomé and Santa María la Blanca. We’ll tour streets that were once named Judíos\, Levíes\, Agua\, Doncella\, and Vida\, reminding us of the city’s Sephardic past. The neighborhood’s whitewashed facades\, flowers\, and patios will provide clues into what daily life was like for Seville’s Jews before the Spanish Inquisition.

SUMMARY:“Nazis Of Copley Square” Book Talk
DESCRIPTION:In 1939\, the Christian Front was formed in response to a call by Father Charles Edward Coughlin to oppose the Popular Front\, a communist organization. The members of the Christian Front were American Catholics who supported a pro-Nazi agenda. In 1940\, the FBI alleged that members of the group were trying to install what they called a “temporary dictatorship” to end the influence of Jews and Communists\, who they saw as the same\, in the United States. Charles Gallagher‘s new book Nazis of Copley Square: The Forgotten Story of the Christian Front chronicles the history of the front and how it was ultimately taken down. Join the Museum for a discussion about the book between Gallagher and David Kertzer\, Pulitzer Prize-winning author and Paul Dupee Professor of Social Science at Brown University.

SUMMARY:Thou Shalt Not Stand Idly By: How One Woman Confronted The Greatest Humanitarian Crisis Of Our Time
DESCRIPTION:Join ADL NY/NJ\, the Museum of Jewish Heritage\, the New York Board of Rabbis\, and 92Y for a conversation with Dr. Georgette Bennett\, whose new book\, Thou Shalt Not Stand Idly By\, tells the story of her efforts to get aid to Syrians during their Civil War. SUMMARY:Virtual Walking Tour: Jewish Istanbul
DESCRIPTION:Join the Museum and Our Travel Circle for a virtual walking tour of Istanbul\, which is home to the vast majority of Turkey’s 26\,000 Jewish citizens. Istanbul’s Jewish community today is a fraction of its size during Ottoman rule in the 16th and 17th centuries\, when it was one of the world’s most important Jewish centers. Unlike Jews in much of Europe\, Istanbul’s 500\,000 Jews were permitted to work in all professions and could enter the Ottoman court. They excelled in commerce and were particularly important leaders in medicine. Remains from that time can still be seen in the Balat area\, along the Golden Horn\, and in the Galata district in Beyoğlu—the centers of Istanbul’s Jewish life. Our tour guide\, Safak\, will take us on a journey through time and into the modern day life of Jews in Istanbul.
