SUMMARY:Works on Water: A Conversation on Water Art and Maritime Heritage
DESCRIPTION:Join the Seaport Museum and artists Sarah Cameron Sunde\, Carolyn Hall\, Clarinda Mac Low\, and Nancy Nowaceck\, representing Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Works on Water 2025 Triennial\, for an evening conversation exploring the intersections of maritime heritage and contemporary “Water Art.” As part of the discussion\, the artists will highlight Walking the Edge—a citywide project that invites New Yorkers to collectively walk all 520 miles of the city’s coastline. Framing walking as a creative act\, Walking the Edge encourages participants of all ages and abilities to experience the waterfront with attention\, intention\, and renewed perspective. In collaboration with Works on Water\, the Seaport Museum has added three contemporary Water Art pieces on view interspersed throughout the Maritime City exhibition as an intervention and reaction to the Museum’s collection. Attendees are invited to view these works beginning at 5:30pm\, before the program starts\, or after the conversation until the galleries close at 7:30pm. The growing genre of Water Art is an environmental art form of the 21st century\, exploring themes of access\, exploitation\, conservation\, remediation\, and care. Featured artists include Mary Mattingly\, Sarah Cameron Sunde\, and the Works on Water Art Collective. These works are on loan courtesy of their creators. A wine reception will follow the program.

SUMMARY:“We Will Dance Again” Screening and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Friendship\, love\, peace and freedom—these ideals drew young hearts from around the globe to Nova’s EDM music festival in the South of Israel. But as the sun rose on October 7th\, the fantasy shattered. Rockets sliced through the sky\, and the dancing stopped. We Will Dance Again is a stark portrayal of the experiences of those who survived and those who didn’t. The film meticulously reconstructs the events\, capturing the raw emotions and heroism that emerged. The screening of the film will be followed by a discussion with Shalev Bitton\, a survivor of the massacre at the Nova Festival\, and Yunnis Alkarnawi\, a Bedouin Israeli who saved Shalev and seven others from the Nova festival\, and also saved twenty-four Thai farm workers.

SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn: Fear City
DESCRIPTION:On October 9th\, join Dr. Kim Phillips-Fein\, the Robert Gardiner-Kenneth T. Jackson Professor of History at Columbia University\, for an in-depth discussion about her book Fear City: New York’s Fiscal Crisis and the Rise of Austerity Politics. \nWhen the news broke that New York City was on the brink of fiscal collapse\, few believed it was possible. Yet\, the city was indeed billions of dollars in the red\, with no way to pay back its debts. Fear City tells the remarkable story of the financial crisis that engulfed the city\, permanently transformed New York\, and reshaped ideas about government across America. \nA sweeping history of some of New York City’s most tumultuous times and an origin story of the politics of austerity\, Fear City is essential for anyone seeking to understand the resurgence of fiscal conservatism today.

SUMMARY:Pipes: Stephen Tharp
DESCRIPTION:One of the preeminent soloists in the U.S. today highlights the vast orchestral range of Trinity’s magnificent new organ. Stephen Tharp performs his own transcriptions of Franz Liszt’s Totentanz and Joseph Jongen’s final movement of the Symphonie Concertante\, as well as an adaptation of Richard Wagner’s Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde. The centerpiece of the evening is his thrilling adaptation of Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring\, which will demonstrate the new organ’s full power and gamut of colors.
