SUMMARY:Virtual Walking Tour: Jewish Florence
DESCRIPTION:Florence is an incredible kaleidoscope of cultures\, faiths\, and languages. It’s believed that Jews lived in Florence since the 13th century\, however\, they were first officially documented there in 1437\, when the Republic called upon a group of resident Jews to restructure their “banchi” (banks)\, as Jews often were at that time offered certain communal benefits in exchange for serving as interfaith money lenders given the Christian ban on usury. Join the Museum of Jewish Heritage and Our Travel Circle on a tour of Jewish Florence. Our walk begins in Roman times\, when Jews and Christians were both viewed as foreigners and strangers to the pagan Roman Empire. See the original site of the very first Jewish Temple on our way to the Piazza della Repubblica\, the site of the now-destroyed Ghetto\, and Signoria Square\, which is famous for its statues. With a special cameo by the David and more\, this tour is bound to dazzle.

SUMMARY:“The Murders of Moisés Ville” Book Talk
DESCRIPTION:Moisés Ville was the epicenter of Argentine Jewish life during the 20th century. It was the first of many agricultural colonies founded by Jews who fled the Russian Empire’s persecution especially. When Javier Sinay discovered an article recounting twenty-two murders in Moisés Ville\, written by his great-grandfather\, a book was born. The discovery sent Sinay on a journey to discover the town’s turbulent past and his family’s history within it. Join the Museum for a discussion with Sinay about his book\, The Murders of Moisés Ville: The Rise and Fall of the Jerusalem of South America\, where he will talk with cultural anthropologist Dr. Natasha Zaretsky.

SUMMARY:Stories Survive: Ann Kliger Axelrod
DESCRIPTION:April’s Stories Survive program features Ann Kliger Axelrod. Ann was born Elizabeth Benedikt on August 25\, 1929 in Budapest\, Hungary. On March 18\, 1944\, when Ann was 14 years old\, the Nazis invaded Hungary and forced Jews to obey the degrading laws that were already in place in Germany. On April 5\, the photo of Ann above was taken by Hungarians at German headquarters in Budapest for her identification. April 5 was also the date when the Jewish Hungarian labor battalions\, including Ann’s brother Lazlo\, were sent to the Russian front. It was the last day that Ann saw her brother. Ann became one of a number of teenage Jewish girls issued a “schutzpasse” by Raoul Wallenberg and put up in a Swedish safe house. After escaping from a transport to Bergen-Belsen with other children\, Ann went to the Budapest ghetto\, where she received false papers from a family friend. Using these papers\, Ann was able to leave the ghetto on November 1944\, and hid with her mother in a bombed-out hotel until Budapest was liberated by the Russians. After the war\, Ann met her husband Shaja Kliger in a bread line in Budapest. They moved to Italy\, where her son Jack\, who is now President of the Museum\, and her daughter Lea were born. In 1948 the family moved to the United States. Here the family lived in Brooklyn\, New York\, where she had her third child\, Stella. Ann now has four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Ann will be interviewed by Rick Salomon\, a co-founder of the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center.

SUMMARY:How Language Helped Shape China’s Rise
DESCRIPTION:What was the biggest obstacle to China’s modernization as the Qing Dynasty collapsed? The Chinese language\, according to Yale University Professor Jing Tsu. Back then\, literacy was reserved for the elite few\, and the system of calligraphy was far too complicated for the technological revolution that was sweeping the world. Join Professor Tsu as she explores the century-long fight to make the Chinese language accessible to the modern world of global trade and digital technology. Drawing on her new book\, Kingdom of Characters\, Tsu will share her perspective on the linguistic advances that helped fuel China’s meteoric rise.

SUMMARY:9/11 and America’s Standing in the World
DESCRIPTION:The events of 9/11 profoundly transformed how the United States engages with the rest of the world. Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton was at the forefront of that transformation\, first as a senator from New York (2001-2009) and then as secretary of state (2009-2013) in the Obama administration. In this conversation with 9/11 Memorial & Museum’s Executive Vice President and Deputy Director for Museum Programs Clifford Chanin\, Secretary Clinton reflects upon the attacks\, the power and limitations of diplomacy in the ensuing two decades\, and what the future might hold for American foreign policy. The program is at capacity and tickets are no longer available. For those unable to attend\, the event will be broadcast live\, with captioning\, at 911memorial.org/watch.

SUMMARY:Jeff Deutsch presents In Praise of Good Bookstores\, in conversation with Sarah McNally
DESCRIPTION:Do we need bookstores in the twenty-first century? If so\, what makes a good one? In this beautifully written book\, Jeff Deutsch–the director of Chicago’s Seminary Co-op Bookstores\, one of the finest bookstores in the world–pays loving tribute to one of our most important and endangered civic institutions. He considers how qualities like space\, time\, abundance\, and community find expression in a good bookstore. Along the way\, he also predicts–perhaps audaciously–a future in which the bookstore not only endures\, but realizes its highest aspirations.

SUMMARY:Ling Shuhua: Her life and Place in the World Literature
DESCRIPTION:A prominent writer of the 20th-century China\, Ling Shuhua was active between the 1920s and the 1950s with a host of influential publications of short stories\, essays\, translations\, and a memoir that firmly established her foremost position in modern Chinese literature. Since most of her short stories were first published in Western journals\, her fame as a diaspora female writer also extended beyond China. Through a transnational literary friendship with Virginia Woolf\, Ling Shuhua entered the Bloomsbury circle\, a constellation of writers\, intellectuals\, philosophers and artists based in London. Woolf held Ling in high regard for her brilliance and originality and labeled her as “the Chinese Katherine Mansfield”. The Renwen Society presents a lecture on Ling Shuhua on April 9 by Prof. Lin Xiaoxia\, a scholar who specializes in the study of the famous Chinese writer. With an introduction to Ling Shuhua’s extraordinary life during the turbulent and transitional era in the first half of the 20th-century China\, Prof. Lin will explore Ling Shuhua’s significant and pioneering contribution to the construction of a world literary theory from a Chinese lens.

SUMMARY:Stories Survive: Solomon Kofinas
DESCRIPTION:More than 80% of Greek Jews were murdered during the Holocaust. Among them were the father\, sister\, mother\, and baby brother of Solomon Kofinas\, a survivor from Athens and a leader of Kehilah Kedosha Janina (KKJ)\, New York’s Greek synagogue. Kofinas was born in 1936 in Athens. After the Nazi invasion of Greece in 1941\, Kofinas and his older brother fled to the outskirts of the city\, where they hid with the help of Greek Orthodox Christians and later with distant family members. They never saw their immediate family again. In 1955\, Kofinas emigrated to New York\, where he married another Holocaust survivor and started a family of his own. Now a grandfather and great-grandfather\, he has served as a gabbai and lay leader at KKJ for more than 50 years. Join the Museum and KKJ for a program with Kofinas exploring his story of loss\, survival\, and rescue in Greece.

SUMMARY:FAÇADES: Construction History in New York and Chicago
DESCRIPTION:The third session of the Construction History series focuses on Facades. Steel frames freed exterior walls from structural duties\, allowing architects new freedom to develop facades that could respond to changing functional and aesthetic criteria. Developers’ desire for efficiency and natural daylight led to thinner\, lighter walls – “veneers” in the dismissive language of early critics and “curtain walls” in the parlance of more enthusiastic designers. Electric lighting\, building materials\, and environmental controls all played roles in changing skyscraper skins in both New York and Chicago. However\, each city’s proximity to varying sources of stone\, glass\, and terra cotta – coupled with differing approaches to fire codes and the politics of local labor unions – created subtly different approaches to skyscraper facades.

SUMMARY:Book Launch: Daniel Mendelsohn Presents Three Rings: A Tale of Exile\, Narrative\, and Fate
DESCRIPTION:In a genre-defying book hailed as “exquisite” (The New York Times) and “spectacular” (The Times Literary Supplement)\, the best-selling memoirist and critic Daniel Mendelsohn explores the mysterious links between the randomness of the lives we lead and the artfulness of the stories we tell. Combining memoir\, biography\, history\, and literary criticism\, Three Rings weaves together the stories of three exiled writers who turned to the classics of the past to create masterpieces of their own—works that pondered the nature of narrative itself: Erich Auerbach\, the Jewish philologist who fled Hitler’s Germany and wrote his classic study of Western literature\, Mimesis\, in Istanbul; François Fénelon\, the seventeenth-century French archbishop whose ingenious sequel to the Odyssey\, The Adventures of Telemachus—a veiled critique of the Sun King and the best-selling book in Europe for a hundred years—resulted in his banishment; and the German novelist W.G. Sebald\, self-exiled to England\, whose distinctively meandering narratives explore Odyssean themes of displacement\, nostalgia\, and separation from home.

SUMMARY:FIRE: Construction History in New York and Chicago
DESCRIPTION:The fourth session of the Construction History series will examine the various dimensions in which the threat of fire affected skyscraper development. Claims of “fireproof building” were regularly disproved\, often in cataclysmic fashion. Iron promised improvements over timber\, but Chicago’s Great Fire in 1871 revealed its vulnerability to collapse. Brick remained the only truly fireproof material\, but owners and designers remained frustrated by its weight and inefficiency. The advent of lightweight terra cotta allowed architects to combine ceramic’s resistance to fire with iron’s efficient strength\, leading to hybrid structures that allowed the safe exploitation of the skeletal frame. Fire also reshaped building codes\, but new regulations reflected the competing desires of owners\, tenants\, architects\, and skilled tradespersons that\, in turn\, influenced skyscraper massing and composition. Differing approaches in New York and Chicago forged subtly different solutions.
