Overview

Located right on the water at the bottom of Battery Park, this bronze sculpture and memorial depicts a real-life historical event: during World War II, a Nazi U-boat attacked a merchant marine vessel, jeopardizing and eventually the lives of the three mariners onboard. The Germans photographed the incident, and from 1988 to 1991, sculptor Marisol Escobar reimagined it for as a memorial to the thousands of merchant ships and crews involved in military service throughout the United States' history. Commissioned by The American Merchant Mariners’ Memorial Inc., dedicated on October 8, 1991.
