Overview

Designed by German artist Fritz Koenig, the 20-ton bronze Sphere famously sat in the plaza located between the Twin Towers from 1971 until the September 11 attacks. Though heavily damaged, the Sphere was recovered in the wreckage, making it the only intact surviving piece of art. The Sphere was relocated to Battery Park from 2002 to 2017, after which it was moved to its permanent home in Liberty Park by the September 11 memorial. Rededicated on August 16, 2017 by the Port Authority of New York.
