Lower Manhattan is becoming positively Parisian, thanks in part to newcomers like Printemps as well as stalwarts like La Parisienne and Paris Cafe. New addition Maison Madison (301 South End Ave.) adds an extra je ne sais quoi to the mix, with French-inspired cocktails and bites in a swanky space.
Helmed by restaurateurs Abraham Merchant and James Belakh, the elegant lounge spares no details, with glam green-and-gold detailing, sparkling chandeliers and marble bar tops. Signature cocktails like the Madison Violette (Empress 1908 gin, creme de violette, lavender, lemon and prosecco) and the citrusy Golden Hour, above, (Pierre Ferrand cognac, armagnac, orange and lemon) are equally picturesque. Diners can munch on French classics like escargot, oysters and truffle pommes frites, in addition to mains like steak frites au poivre and a juicy gruyere cheeseburger au jus. And of course, there are French desserts galore, including macarons and a hefty house mille-feuille with cream and fresh berries.
If you’re looking for a post-work deal, Maison Madison’s aperitif hour runs Monday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the bar, with prosecco for $12, negronis for $14 and house martinis for $15; escargot, Parisian garden bruschetta and a petit charcuterie and cheese board are also available for discounted prices. Do note that the lounge has a recommended smart or business casual dress code, and loungewear, flip-flops or otherwise casual clothing is not allowed — so grab your cutest ‘fit and head over for a sleek night out all around.
