Did you know that until the late 19th century, women could not dine in public without being accompanied by a man? It’s true — and that taboo was broken right here in Lower Manhattan. On April 20, 1868, downtown’s own Delmonico’s (56 Beaver St.) hosted the first Ladies’ Luncheon, organized by journalist Jane Cunningham Croly, which gave women the opportunity to dine without male escorts and paved the way for all-gender solo dining.
This Women’s History Month, Delmonico’s is paying homage to these enterprising early women diners with a special Ladies Luncheon Menu. A $49 three-course lunch menu includes popular dishes like yellowfin tuna tartare, roasted organic chicken and prime flat iron steak frites. Proceeds benefit Mariska Hargitay’s Joyful Heart Foundation, which supports the healing journeys of survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse.
The menu is available through April 20; make your reservation today.
