Make Your Own Sailor Valentine at the Seaport Museum

Jusssst in case you need to amp up your Valentine with a little something extra after the flowers and the wining and dining, consider honing your arts-and-crafts skills at the South Street Seaport Museum (12 Fulton Street). There, the friendly staff will walk you through how to construct your own 1800s-era gift in the tradition of maritime romance. Indeed it’s not much more than a wooden box, but it is a wooden box made from love.

“Historically, these small wooden boxes were given by seafarers to their wives, sweethearts, daughters, and loved ones when they returned from a long voyage,” the Museum notes. “The small boxes open to reveal sentimental messages surrounded with intricate mosaics of shells and found objects arranged in exquisite geometric patterns and motifs such as hearts, anchors, and flowers.” Workshops are Saturday, February 11, and Sunday, February 12, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The event is free.
