Though Statue of Liberty herself is only a spry 139 years old, what better time to see her up close than the summer the United States turns 250? Then again, there’s never a bad time to visit and rediscover one of New York City’s most iconic landmarks. Especially since the Statue of Liberty isn’t just for tourists — the experience is just as valuable for long-time New Yorkers. Plus, let’s be honest. Any excuse to get on a boat this summer is a good one.
To reach Liberty Island, hop on a Statue City Cruises ferry from Battery Park or from New Jersey’s Liberty State Park, which is the only authorized way to get to either island. One ticket gives you the chance to explore both Liberty Island and Ellis Island, and see the incredible views from the New York Harbor along the way.
Once you’re on Liberty Island, check out the Statue of Liberty museum, which has exhibits about the history of the monument and (our personal favorite) the statue’s original torch. And don’t forget to take some pics — the island is the best place to get shots of Lady Liberty from every angle. For an even more memorable experience, reserve a ticket in advance to climb the pedestal or, with crown access, the 162 winding steps all the way to the top.
Your next stop, Ellis Island, is home to the National Museum of Immigration, as it is where 12 million immigrants were processed when they arrived in the United States. Walk through the restored Great Hall, browse photographs and personal artifacts, and gain a deeper appreciation of the immigrants stories that make up New York City and the country.
Whether you’re entertaining out-of-town guests, or have lived here for years without making the trip, consider this is your sign to finally go. It’s one of the city’s classic experiences for a reason.
