You Can Still Sign Up for the Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk

The Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk takes place each year on the last Sunday of September — an opportunity for New Yorkers to lace up their shoes in commemoration of New York firefighter Stephen Siller, as well as the 343 members of FDNY and law enforcement who lost their lives on September 11.

The annual run/walk is regarded as one of the more high-profile runs in the country, as the event began in 2002 to memorialize Siller’s heroics during the attack on the World Trade Center.

CBS News has some of Siller’s story:

The attacks on the World Trade Center came blaring over Stephen Siller’s radio – just as he had gotten off the late shift at Squad 1 in Park Slope, Brooklyn – halting his trip to play golf with his three brothers.

Without hesitation, Siller turned his truck around and raced towards the burning towers but was stopped at the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel. Siller wouldn’t be deterred from his duty to save lives. He strapped on 60 pounds of firefighting gear and ran through the tunnel and into history.

Details to sign up for this year’s run on Sunday, September 24, starting at 9:30 a.m., can be found at the Tunnel to Towers website. Proceeds from the event support the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which is dedicated to helping first responders and catastrophically injured service members.
